Calistoga Cellars Zinfandel Napa Valley 2006

Member Review by MrRiesling:

Extremely plummy with additional notes of spiced pumpkin pie and smoked meat on the nose. On the palate, plum and chocolate predominate. Firm tannins. Goes well with blue cheese.

In July 1996, Roger Louer and several of his best friends bought 11 acres of vineyards in Napa Valley, near Calistoga, along with the Blossom Creek Cottage. Originally, there was no plan to create a winery. But after a few years of selling grapes to some of Napa's top wineries, they decided to take the plunge into the winemaking world. Roger writes: "Friends from around the Country would come visit my wife and me, stay in the Blossom Creek cottage, and begin to become emotionally invested in what we were doing. So I thought, why not invite our friends to become part of the winemaking process, and make them partial owners? Sharing that process with our friends has been the key to our success. With partners all over the country, we have ambassadors in many major US markets. They help gain recognition for the brand by introducing it to their favorite retailers, restaurants, and distributors in their own backyards. This grass roots approach has been crucial to our growth, since national marketing on this level is often too exhausting or expensive for young wineries." Read less

This was a Vintage 2007. I bought it as part of belonging to a wine cub. It was a smooth wine, not as full bodied as some of the Zins I've tasted. It could be due to the fact that I didn't allow the wine to breathe properly.

Opened the 2005 Zin last night. The cork was troublingly dry. The contents was horrid. I don't like panning wines as I think they all have their place, but I was shocked and disappointed and am paying the price today. Sad to say this offering belongs in the "Easter egg dye" category. What were they thinking?

This deep, cherry-red Zinfandel exhibits aromas of raspberry and blackberry with undertones of black pepper. The juicy blackberry flavors combine with lush plum and supple tannins to finish in a bold, fruit-forward wine that is a classic example of the varietal. Zinfandels go well with ldquo;typical Americanrdquo; food such as pizza, burgers and BBQ.

Oaky, with smoky sandalwood, caramel and buttered toast flavors dominating the blackberries, mulberries, tobacco and peppery spices. The tannins are rich and acidity is fine.

The delicious, plump Zinfandel that show aromas of chocolate, blackberries and vibrant tannins. Drinks well alone but even better with any meats off the grill.
