This was a nice, but unremarkable Rioja. Grape and cherry notes on the nose. Light but very drying tannins on the tongue. Acidic bright finish calmed down once the bottle had aired out a bit - decant this one for a smoother finish.

I opened this on my birthday a few days ago. Very good wine! Eleven years old with the tertiary aromas fully developed. Decanting was absolutely necessary and the second day was still good enough! 2001 was an excelent year for Rioja. Could stay one or two years but not longer than this, because of the moderate acidity.

i pick this up for $12.99 at Trader Joe's...it might be one of the best bargains on the market. Just wonderful, classic Rioja temparanillo with strong (but not overpowering) tannins and complex character.

Wine Spectator ReviewRated 87Fresh and clean, this red shows dark flavors of black cherry, chocolate and smoke, with a food-friendly balance of light tannin and crisp acidity. Drink now through 2008.Wine Tasting NotesWith Baron de Chirel, Riscal have achieved a milestone in the production of fine wines. Highly successful in both the domestic and international market, this wine is ideal for accompanying red and white meat, roasts, game, poultry, rice dishes, bean stews, mushrooms, mature and blue cheese.

Weingut: Marques de RiscalRegion: RiojaRebsorte: TempranilloInhalt: 0,75 lAlkoholgehalt: 13 Vol.%Fassreife: in Barriques gereift (48 Monate)Empfohlene Serviertemperatur: 16-18°C Rotwein > Spanien > Rioja

Winemaker's Notes:

Marqués de Riscal Gran Reserva 2001 is a dark-cherry coloured wine with brick red hues. Its aroma is complex and balsamic, with burnt wood and hints of spices such as black pepper and cinnamon. It has an oily mouth-feel, with good backbone and concentration of tannins, round and supple with a long, silky finish.
