Calera Pinot Noir Central Coast 35th Anniversary 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

A wonderful, full gentle bouquet of red plum, berries, rose petal and mineral accents lively flavors of blackberry, raspberry and sassy sour cherry. This wine offers great depth, spice, a hint of sweet oak and beautiful texture with very fine-grained tannins and a soft, round, easy drinking mouthfeel that lingers on. Not yet reviewed; 2009 vintage rated 92 points by Wine Advocate: The 2009 Pinot Noir bursts from the glass with expressive red fruit, flowers, spices and mint. It shows lovely mid-palate juiciness and an elegant, polished finish. At $24 a bottle, it may very well be the single finest value in American Pinot Noir... This is a dazzling wine from start to finish... Wow! Anticipated maturity: 2011-2016.

Ninety miles south of San Francisco, the vineyards are at 2,200 ft. elevation. The heat of the season is mitigated by cooling sea breezes from Monterey Bay. Several varietals are grown, with Pinot Noir having the lion's share at roughly 70 % of production, followed by Chardonnay and Viognier at approximately 21 % and 9 % respectively. An entirely gravity-fed production facility, the new building is a testament to artisanal winemaking, with average yearly production nearing 30,000 cases of all varietals. Read less

A classy art-of-the-blend cuveacute;e that's very ripe but still complex, relying on rich dark berry, plum, crushed rock and cedar. So young and vibrant at this stage, yet also so deep and tight, that it's both tempting to drink now but looks like a great cellar choice as well. Drink now through 2021.

The 2010 Pinot Noir is gorgeous. There is an immediacy to the fruit that is quite striking. Juicy dark berries, flowers and spices flesh out on the inviting finish. This isnrsquo;t as compelling as the 2009, but it is awfully close. The only problem with the 2010 is going to be finding it, as production is down a whopping 50%. Anticipated maturity: 2012ndash;2018.
