Nicely stemmy and lightly vegetal on the nose with aromas that recall strawberry and carrot tops. There's a lovely hint of spicy wood here that really sets off the lightly smoky raspberry and strawberry fruit. A bit chunky early on, this is soft and broad in the mouth with faint mocha accents to the rather intense blackberry and black plum skin fruit of the mid-palate. There's impressive intensity to the fruit and the wine remains firm and focused in the mouth with nice cut on the back end and right through the lightly mineral, dry fruited finish. Not complex but intense and decisive in the mouth, with lovely freshness to the tannins. 88pts
The nose was highly expressive with a bouquet that showed sweet cherries, pine nettles and dark soil notes. On the palate it was silky smooth yet juicy, with pure dark cherry fruit, hints of herbs, and a crack of pepper. The finish followed suit, as it’s red fruit and earthy profile slowly melted away from the palate. (91 points)

An excellent bargain in Pinot Noir, the 2008 Pinot Noir Central Coast offers a delicious introduction to the Calera style. Fifty percent whole clusters were used, and the wine was aged 11 months in Francois Freres Burgundy barrels, of which 10% were new. Bottled unfiltered, it is a blend of fruit from four separate Central Coast counties, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, San Benito, and Santa Clara. Attractive notes of roasted herbs, sweet and sour cherries, strawberry jam, sassafras, and earth emerge from this medium to full-bodied, supple-textured, seductive red. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.
Bright ruby appearance. Medium-bodied. Moderately extracted. Mildly tannic. Black fruits, blackberries. Quite full berry flavors on the palate linger through the finish. Very harmonious and drinking very well now.
