90 points Robert Parker: [$28 list] An excellent bargain in Pinot Noir, the 2008 Pinot Noir Central Coast offers a delicious introduction to the Calera style. Fifty percent whole clusters were used, and the wine was aged 11 months in Francois Freres Burgundy barrels, of which 10% were new. Bottled unfiltered, it is a blend of fruit from four separate Central Coast counties, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, San Benito, and Santa Clara. Attractive notes of roasted herbs, sweet and sour cherries, strawberry jam, sassafras, and earth emerge from this medium to full-bodied, supple-textured, seductive red. Ninety miles south of San Francisco, the vineyards are at 2,200 ft. elevation. The heat of the season is mitigated by cooling sea breezes from Monterey Bay. Several varietals are grown, with Pinot Noir having the lion's share at roughly 70 % of production, followed by Chardonnay and Viognier at approximately 21 % and 9 % respectively. Calera's basic Central Coast Pinot is a good, drily crisp wine, showing some real elegance. A little heavy, it shows cherry, red currant, herb, tobacco, teriaki beef and sandalwood flavors. Drink now. More than 12,000 cases were produced.

Offers a broad range of flavors, displaying spicy cherry, plum and spice flavors that are focused, lively, intense and concentrated. The flavors fan out and are supported by fine tannins on the finish.

Spicy, with an herbal streak running through the cherry notes. Turns complex and a bit tannic. Drink now through 2001.

This fine Pinot Noir easily holds its own when tasted against far more expensive bottlings. Itandrsquo;s softly silky and delicately structured and enormously rich, offering delicious waves of raspberries, cherries, oranges, cola, beef jerky and black pepper. A perfect Pinot Noir to drink now. Easy to find, with nearly 13,000 cases produced.
