Calera Mount Harlan Thirtieth Anniversary Vintage Ryan Vineyard Pinot Noir 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

New York Times Picks for Pinot Noir "On The Lighter Side"Plum, black cherry, spice and cedar aromas introduce this fourth vintage of Ryan vineyard – our youngest Mt. Harlan Pinot Noir block. West facing aspect and higher elevation give this vineyard unique character, yet it already possesses that classic Mt. Harlan minerality, focus and structure. Bright, youthful and vibrant, this charmer offers berry, cola, plum and Asian spice with a fleshy, persistent finish.

Ninety miles south of San Francisco, the vineyards are at 2,200 ft. elevation. The heat of the season is mitigated by cooling sea breezes from Monterey Bay. Several varietals are grown, with Pinot Noir having the lion's share at roughly 70 % of production, followed by Chardonnay and Viognier at approximately 21 % and 9 % respectively. An entirely gravity-fed production facility, the new building is a testament to artisanal winemaking, with average yearly production nearing 30,000 cases of all varietals. Read less

Wine & Spirits ReviewRated 94Josh Jenson planted the Ryan Vineyard in 1998, the youngest pinot noir vines he grows at Calera. At 2,400 feet, they're also the highest vines on the limestone ridges of Mt. Harlan. Altitude plays a clear role in the creation of this wine, which expresses its wild raspberry fruit character in a brisk combination of acidity and minerality. The wine continues to evolve as it takes on air, filling out the structure. A fine, elegant pinot noir, this could be cellared for up to a decade or decanted now to enjoy with roasted quail.Wine Tasting NotesPlum, black cherry, spice and cedar aromas introduce this fourth vintage of Ryan vineyard - our youngest Mt.
