Calera 'De Villiers Vineyard' Pinot Noir 2015

Member Review by BeaufortLongest:

This is a brand new single vineyard, and the first release to boot. What to expect? No real benchmark to compare to yet. The aroma forcefully exudes right out of the glass. I was told that a portion of the grapes used for this release formerly went into the cuvee, so I maybe had a preconception that the intensity might be a little marginalized say compared to a Selleck or a Jensen. But it's potent! I get a little heat and some quick tannin, but that is completely to be expected. I'd opine that optimally this should wait until 2011-2014 for ideal consumption. Within the first five seconds there are an almost unexpected array of fruit profiles that move across the palate. Complex. Not a terribly long finish, but very balanced in the short to mid-term. Very nice. I've seen it going for $35.

Ninety miles south of San Francisco, the vineyards are at 2,200 ft. elevation. The heat of the season is mitigated by cooling sea breezes from Monterey Bay. Several varietals are grown, with Pinot Noir having the lion's share at roughly 70 % of production, followed by Chardonnay and Viognier at approximately 21 % and 9 % respectively. An entirely gravity-fed production facility, the new building is a testament to artisanal winemaking, with average yearly production nearing 30,000 cases of all varietals. Read less

Here’s a good, dry and fairly complex Pinot Noir from the same estate as Calera’s better and more expensive block bottings. It’s light bodied and spicy, with earthy notes of tobacco, herbs, cherries and sandalwood. Drink now, after a good decanting.

Vivid red. Pungent aromas of candied red berries, incense and botanical herbs, with a suave floral note gaining strength with air. Juicy and precise, with seamless texture and very good depth to its spicy red and dark berry flavors. Finishes sappy and long, with echoing notes of red berries and flowers.

The 2008 Pinot Noir de Villiers Vineyard flows from the glass with layers of dark cherries, menthol, licorice and tobacco. It is a wonderfully fleshy, expressive Pinot to drink now and over the next decade. Despite the richness of the fruit, there is more than enough structure for this to drink well for quite some time. Anticipated maturity: 2012–2020.
