Calcareous Syrah Paso Robles 2008

Member Review by Matt Walker:

Deep purple with aromas of plums, black cherries, and boysenberry, with a touch of vanilla oak. The palate is dense and opulent, almost creamy. Tannins are quite firm but are balanced by the immensely concentrated fruit. Other flavors detected include cocoa, allspice, and smoked meat.

Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

89 points. Very deep, tart cherries and apple tones introduce the nose. Dark volcanic stone notes and a bit of flint play off of dark plums and blackberries. The aroma of this wine is incredibly dark, but manages to be fresh and ripe at the same time. It’s very appealing and inviting. The palate is soft, ripe and sweet, and enjoyably plush. Very nice spice cake tones appear at the first sip, with butter and cream tones coming through into the mid palate. Dark volcanic stone and ripe tones of plum and mixed berries emerge before notes of exotic wood appear moving into the finish. This is a plush, nicely complex, and loveable wine Source: What's Worth Drinking: http://whatsworthdrinking.com/2010/09/23/post-72-central-coast-adventures-pt-11-syrah-week-exploring-the-new-world/

The 2005 Syrah is magenta red and purple in color. Dark fruits such as blackberry, cherry, & blueberry dominate the bouquet, complimented by a touch of oak spice and nutmeg. These dark fruits carry through to the mid pallet and finish with soft fruit, vanilla, oak and spice.

Tasting Notes:

Its deep aromas of plum and caramel dominate the nose while full bodied cream, mocha and bramble berry coat the palate. Vanilla and smoked bacon (from the French oak barrels) blend with the leathery fruit to create a long, spicy finish supported by luscious, soft tannins. This wine was built to last!

260 cases produced.

Closure: Cork

Aged 26 months in French Oak.
