Food Pairings for Cakebread Napa Valley Reserve. Chard
Very nice chard with good fruit and clean, crisp acidity. Excellent balance.
I had this as part of a Cakebread tasting with food pairing that I won! This was a wonderful chardonnay. It was toasty and smells like fresh butter. Lightly oaked, it was silky creamy smooth although it had a slightly bitter end. The sad part is that the food pairing of mango salsa salad was not that good. The red onion a little over powering and the tomatoes was too much acid that cut the smoothness. Otherwise, mango was a great idea! Not a big Chardonnay drinker, but this was smooth and enjoyable.
This is as superb a wine as a Chardonnay can be with aromas of clarified butter and sharp citrus. The okay bouquet is not as pungent as normal oaked Chardonnays, which makes this wine all the more intriguing. On the palate there is a fullness to this wine, which gives it a creamy texture without being too heavy. Deliciously intensive with sweet fruits of ripe apple and nectarine. This Chardonnay is heady decadence and absolutely my type of chardonnay with a long, lingering finish that adds a distinct dryness to the tongue and makes you want more.
This is one of my favorites. Very sweet finish that lingers on the pallet. Sweeter the more you drink.
Great chardonnay. Even better on an expense account.
Oakey nose, rustic and creamy. Great Carneros style chardonnay, rich, creamy and complex. - Tasted at Hostile Grape 3/10/10
External Reviews for Cakebread Napa Valley Reserve. Chard
Grown in Carneros (50 percent) and further north in the Napa Valley, this is a dynamic chardonnay with broad dimensions. It builds on a rich fruit flavor of cider apples, layered with chamomile and wheat. Therersquo;s a satisfying length of flavor, seeming to incorporate the cool feel of a stonewalled cellar with the warmth of the autumn sun. Delicious now, this should gain more complexity with age.

Special Case Price! Winemaker's Notes - We night-harvest and whole-cluster-press our Napa Valley Chardonnay grapes to fully capture their intense varietal flavors and fresh acidity, attributes magnified by the cool 2010 growing season. Barrel fermenting the vast majority of the juice and aging the wine for eight months in one-third new French oak barrels, with periodic stirring of the yeast lees to enhance texture and complexity, yields a rich, mouthfilling Chardonnay with yeasty, sweet green apple and straw scents; pure, ripe apple, melon and citrus flavors; and a long, refreshingly crisp finish.
Serves up an appealing mix of earthy citrus, ripe pear and green apple flavors that are well-focused and unobstructed by oak. Finishes with a rich, clean aftertaste. Drink now through 2009.
Give this fine Chard some time in the bottle to knit together. Tasted at about one year of age, it was a little disjointed, but the parts are quite good. The flavors of pineapples, Meyer lemons and golden mango need time to integrate with the butterscotchy, caramelly oak.
Clean and refreshing, snappy and vibrant, with zesty citrus, fresh quince and green apple notes. Drink now through 2012.
A crisp, flinty style, with peach, pear, anise and nectarine notes and little if any noticeable oak. Drink now through 2006.
