Cakebread Cellars Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley 2017

External Review by We Speak Wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings: Surpassingly fresh, vivid aromas of white flowers, ripe melon and citrus fruit introduce rich, zesty flavors of pink grapefruit, melon and guava, leading to a long, crisp finish buoyed by bright acidity and refreshing citrus and mineral tones. Irresistible now, this classic Napa Valley sauvignon blanc will age gracefully for the next 3-5 years and beautifully accompany seafood, poultry, vegetable and salad dishes. Vineyards: We craft our sauvignon blanc from grapes grown in top-flight vineyards throughout Napa Valley, including, from south to north, our own estate ranches in Carneros, Suscol Springs, Rutherford and Calistoga. The exceptional fruit from these sites enables us to craft a sauvignon blanc that is simultaneously fresh, crisp and zesty. Vintage: The winter of 2017 saw the heaviest rainfall in northern California in 30 years, rejuvenating the vines after years of drought. Spring was mild, resulting in healthy flowering and grape set. Our sauvignon blanc grapes ripened uniformly throughout the summer months, developing tremendously concentrated flavors coupled with balanced acidity. Heat spikes around the time of August harvest resulted in smaller grape yields. While limited in size, the vintage is exceptional in quality. Winemaking: For decades, we’ve harvested our sauvignon blanc grapes during the cool nighttime hours to fully capture their fresh, pure flavors and vibrant acidity. Whole-cluster-pressing the fruit under anaerobic conditions maximizes varietal intensity while minimizing the extraction of astringent compounds from the skins. In 2017, we fermented 81% of the juice in stainless steel tanks and 19% in neutral French oak barrels, a regimen yielding bright, concentrated aromas and flavors. The wine aged five months in neutral French oak barrels before bottling in March, 2018. Barrel Aging: five months in neutral French oak Alcohol Content: 13.7% Total Acidity: 0.67 grams/100 ml pH: 3.29

not Cakebread's best effort. A little too tart. The Chardonnay is killer though.

The Sauvignon Blanc is very pale gold, almost completely transparent in color. The first nose is sharp and a little offensive, a bit like cat pee that had dried out. Sounds awful right? Just give it a minute and it settles into an aroma of gooseberry tart and granny smith apples. On the palate it is again quite sharp and tart initially and then becomes a little smoother and quite mouth-watering with flinty, mineral tones. The wine is full-bodied and opens up into a plethora of fruits from melon to passion fruit and lemon and lime. It has a wonderfully long and gratifying finish. This is a spirited wine that should be enjoyed with friends and laughter and perhaps a light, fresh pasta dinner.

The 2007 Cakebread Cellars Sauvignon Blanc is 89% Sauvignon Blanc grapes, 7% Semillon grapes, and 4% Sauvignon Musque grapes. The wine was a pale-to-medium lemon color with very visible legs. On the nose, I found strong lime aromas, followed by pink grapefruit and mineral. In the mouth, the strong lime flavors matched the lime aromas on the nose, and they were followed with grapefruit, very ripe kiwi, and honeydew. There was also a slight hint of something floral on the finish. For my complete review, visit my blog at http://bit.ly/Inh11

Mother Nature has some fantastic building blocks to create tasty wine in that blessed valley in California, but it’s nothing that couldn’t be enhanced by a little artistry. Winemaker Julianne Laks blends 4% Sauvignon Musqué and 7% Sémillon in the Sauvignon Blanc for enhanced aromatics, softer acidity and brighter citrus. Cakebread further coaxes complexity and intensity from the grapes by fermenting and aging the wine in a combination of tank-fermentation and in neutral French oak barrel aging; fermentation and aging in barrel; and tank-fermentation with no barrel aging. That seems like a lot of work, but it’s worth it. Look: Harvest moonbeams in a glass slipper, staying at the party well past midnight. Smell: Flinty oyster shells and lemon rind left on the plate after a picnic. Plenty of grapefruit and kiwi left for desert. Taste: Intense as an Indian Summer that knows its days are numbered. A rich harvest of melon, grapefruit, lemon zest and honeysuckle with a nice balance of crisp mineral with an undertone of vanilla oak for a lasting finish. Tasting Notes & Food Pairings: Vibrant, wonderfully fresh aromas of pink grapefruit, melon and white peach introduce zesty flavors of Meyer lemon, lime, guava, gooseberry and juicy melon. Lively acidity accentuates the wine’s flavor intensity and animates its long, harmonious finish, which features succulent citrus and mineral tones. Delicious now, this classic Napa Valley sauvignon blanc will age gracefully for the next 3-5 years, and beautifully accompany seafood, poultry, vegetable and salad dishes. Vineyards: The grapes for our sauvignon blanc come from premier vineyards throughout Napa Valley, including our estate ranches in Carneros, southeastern Napa, Rutherford and Calistoga. This diversity of fruit enables us to craft a rich, complex sauvignon blanc that is simultaneously fresh, crisp and zesty. Our 2016 vintage is a blend of 97% sauvignon blanc and 3% semillon. Vintage: The 2016 vintage in Napa Valley got off to an excellent start with much-needed winter and early spring rainfall that replenished soils and the water table. Moderate-to-warm springtime temperatures generated early flavor development in the grapes, while a generally cool growing season ensured their slow and uniform ripening. These conditions yielded sauvignon blanc grapes with tremendous flavor concentration coupled with perfectly balanced acidity. Winemaking: We harvest our sauvignon blanc grapes during the cool nighttime hours to fully capture their fresh, pure flavors and vibrant acidity. Whole-cluster-pressing the fruit under anaerobic conditions maximizes varietal intensity while minimizing the extraction of astringent compounds from the skins. In 2016, we fermented 81% of the juice in stainless steel tanks and 19% in neutral French oak barrels, a unique regimen that yields bright, concentrated, varietal aromas and flavors. The wine was then aged for five months in neutral French oak barrels before bottling in February, 2017. Alcohol Content: 13.8% pH: 3.32 Total Acidity: 0.68 grams/100 ml ** Only 5 in Stock **

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings: Bright, super-fresh aromas of sweet citrus, melon, guava and white flowers introduce pure, vibrant flavors of grapefruit, guava, gooseberry, fleshy melon and white peach, with a refreshing minerality invigorating the wine’s long, crisp finish. Arguably one of Cakebread Cellars’ best-ever sauvignon blancs, this Napa Valley classic will age gracefully for the next 3-5 years and beautifully accompany your favorite salad, seafood, poultry and vegetable dishes. Vineyards: Our sauvignon blanc grapes come from top vineyards throughout Napa Valley, including our estate ranches in Carneros, southeastern Napa, Rutherford and Calistoga. The superb fruit from these sites enables us to craft a rich, complex sauvignon blanc that is simultaneously fresh, crisp and zesty. Our outstanding 2015 vintage blends 90% sauvignon blanc with 6% semillon and 4% sauvignon musqué, an especially aromatic clone of sauvignon blanc. Vintage: After abundant harvests from 2012 through 2014, the 2015 vintage produced a notably lighter crop. A warm, dry winter fostered early bud-break, and consistently mild summer weather, with a few late-season heat spikes, led to our earliest harvest ever. (Since Cakebread Cellars has been around since 1973, that’s saying something.) The light crop produced small sauvignon blanc berries and clusters boasting intense varietal flavors. We harvested the fruit between August 4th and September 2nd with a perfect balance of sugars and acidity. Winemaking: We harvest our sauvignon blanc grapes during the cool nighttime hours to fully capture their fresh, pure flavors and bright acidity. Whole-cluster-pressing of the fruit maximizes varietal intensity while minimizing the extraction of astringent compounds from the skins. In 2015, we fermented 80% of the juice in stainless steel tanks and 20% in neutral French oak barrels, a regimen producing a deep, vibrant expression of sauvignon blanc. The wine aged five months in neutral French oak barrels before bottling on February 22nd, 2016.
