Cakebread Cellars Red Blend Howell Mountain Dancing Bear Ranch 2009

External Review by CityWineCellar.com:

Tasting Notes:Our 2007 Dancing Bear displays the intriguing dance of intensity and elegance that has become this mountain wines trademark. High-toned aromas of freshly crushed boysenberries, dark cherries and forest-floor spice (imagine walking in a pine forest after a light summer rainfall) introduce a big, dense, tightly wound palate packed with marvelously rich and concentrated black cherry, boysenberry and blackberry flavors, which are enhanced by savory clove, cocoa and vanilla tones. Beautifully structured and with great reserves of intense fruit supported by round, beautifully integrated tannins, this dramatic mountain red will delight wine lovers now and over the next decade.

The outstanding 2006 Dancing Bear Ranch Proprietary Red (79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc) is a medium-bodied, elegant Cabernet-based wine with a dense purple color as well as a sweet bouquet of loamy soil, crushed rock, black currant, plum, licorice, and a hint of subtle, well-integrated new oak. Approachable now, this 2006 promises to evolve for 12-15+ years.

Intense and tight, firm and concentrated, offering a mix of dried currant, loamy earth, herb, sage and mineral. Full-bodied, with a long, persistent finish. Needs time. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Best from 2012 through 2023.

The dense purple-colored 2007 Dancing Bear Ranch Proprietary Red (80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc) reveals more chocolate fudge and coffee notes. It does not have the nuances or complexity of the Benchland Select or the sheer joy of the Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, but there is a lot going on in this cuvée. Slightly monolithic, it is well-endowed, rich and full, so my rating may be slightly conservative.

This is a very rich wine. Complex, too. With every sip, it seems to offer a little more of itself. On the surface, itrsquo;s dry, tannic and fruity, with blackberry, black currant, dark chocolate and cedar flavors. But it has mineral and herb nuances that seem to spring from the soil, and the depth and finish are impressive. Drink now for sheer luxury, and should continue to develop over the next decade.
