What to Expect

A lesser known grape variety from Italy's Piedmonte region, Freisa produces light to medium bodied wines with bright acidity and a moderate amount of hard tannins. Freisa is made in several styles including as a dry red table wine or more traditionally as Freisa Vivace, a slightly effervescent style that may be a touch sweet. It typically exhibits red cherry fruit with subtle accents of bitter herbs, spicy notes and a bit of tar.

Had a glass at a restaurant, and it was extremely warm and such a light wine that it came off tasting pretty lifeless with lots of tannin. I actually took my glass of ice water and kept it touching the glass of wine for a bit, and it helped the flavor (I'm sure a little oxygen helped too.) Very dry and very light, not a ton of fruit, but easily quaffable.
