Byron Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir 2014

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Fearless red berry and cherry aromas with heat and spice in equal measure. Good floral aromas, mountain herbs and a touch of violet. In the mouth, it's quite fruit forward, full of red fruit, mostly cherry but with some strawberry, cranberry and even watermelon though that's much lighter. Fresh acidity and good structure support the fruit flavors but stay to the back, giving away the fine care that was put into this bottle to balance the vanilla notes of the oak with the fruit, acidity, tannins and the herbal, medicinal finish. 88 pts.

Among the group was Ken Brown who established his Byron Winery on the site of the original, historic Nielsen Vineyard. Brown’s innovative gravity-feed winemaking facility and intensive viticultural experiments helped revolutionize cold-climate grape growing in California. Today, Byron is focused on single vineyard and regional bottlings of Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from the best benchland sites throughout Santa Barbara County. Read less

Tight on the nose with some oak showing a hint of cocoa and a sweet medicinal edge to emerging black cherry fruit that shows some bitter orange rind notes and gently floral top notes. Also a bit tight in the mouth, showing fine red cherry skin and raspberry, almost strawberry fruit in an attractively lean and well focused style. This has the feel of Pinot Noir, no baby fat, good clarity on the palate, finely grained and almost mineral tannins that transition to some gently herbal bay leaf and vanilla toned accents on the backend before fading a bit quickly on the finish. A bit understated, yet this is my style of Pinot, snappy, focused, and even though there is a vein of oak through this this still manages to be a wine of varietal character. 88pts

Nice red berry fruit on the nose with sour cherry and berry notes. Hints of cedar dust and cinnamon. Suggestions of darker, blue fruit as well. Vibrant and lively on the palate with an undertone of blueberry and darker red fruit with a zing of subtle cinnamon throughout. Some acai and purple plum notes as well. A nice herbal suggestion. Nice. 88 pts. 9/29/13

Dazzling cherry Jolly Rancher notes on the nose, with bold currant and warm spice notes on the palate. Rich fruit and a velvety finish, with just enough acidity to give it vibrancy without being tart. Great with more savory dishes, especially mildly spicy ones.

It’s hard to find a tastier Pinot Noir for this price. Aromas of rose petals, pungent violets and raspberry juice show just a touch of chai tea, and the palate proves juicy and fun, with cranberry, pomegranate and raspberry elements. Black tea and mocha flavors add just enough seriousness.

Byron’s basic 2012 Santa Barbara is that rare bird: delicious, affordable California pinot noir. Sourced from three vineyards in Santa Maria Valley, two near Los Alamos and one in the Santa Rita Hills, it’s frisky and approachable, lasting on fresh red-fruit-skin flavor and fine tannins, light on its feet, with a hard-to-resist juiciness reminiscent of cru Beaujolais. Buy a case and watch it disappear.

There’s plenty to admire here, starting with a firm mix of red berry, gravelly earth, black licorice, herb and cedar notes. Dries out a bit on the finish. Drink now through 2020.

Sage and pomegranate form the fragrant nose on this wine from the Santa Maria Valley’s longtime producer Byron, now owned by the Jackson Family Wines. It is still made by Jonathan Nagy, who’s been there since 2001. On the palate, sour cherry and cinnamon have a tannic backbone that will allow the wine to stand up to roasted meats as well as lighter fare.

Byron Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir is very full and forward in the 2011 vintage. The wine has bing cherry and lavender aromatics, with some notes of green tea and cola. Very layered and pleasurable.

The 2011 vintage included a very warm and dry winter and spring. These conditions led to being fruitful with small clusters and small berries with flavors of dark berry, cherry, hints of floral and mineral. This is a forward approachable wine that displ
