Byron Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Floral with raspberry and cranberry fruits on the nose along with dry, sandy soil tones and some lovely smoky herb and beet root accents. Light on the palate and rather mouth filling if not weighty with aromatic light red fruits that show fine floral and herbal accents. Gaining lovely sweet tea nuance on the backend and finishing with fine grained if slightly dry tannins this offers an attractive blend of freshness, complexity, and a texture that is light but grounded by tannins. Subtle and lovely. This really is fairly tannic in a gentle sort of way. Love the texture. 91pts

Among the group was Ken Brown who established his Byron Winery on the site of the original, historic Nielsen Vineyard. Brown’s innovative gravity-feed winemaking facility and intensive viticultural experiments helped revolutionize cold-climate grape growing in California. Aromas driven by cedar and spice. Red flowers, cinnamon stick, ripe red berry fruit driven by strawberry. Sleek palate with dried flowers including rose petals. Finely grained tannin with dark berry fruit which leans a tad sour. Wild red and black raspberry with dried herbal hints and a nice mineral tone. Best with food. Good acidity. 87 pts.

Another red P.Noir that I love. For the money, this is truly an excellent buy and a must have for friends & family events.

This was very good. Lots of cherry and cola in the glass. Very rich fruit in the mouth. I wouldn't call this a classic wine by any means, it just isn't complex enough, but it certainly makes a higher end daily drinker or a wine to pull out for dinner guests if you don't want to grab a bottle from the cellar. I had this with a Macadamia Nut Chicken and it went very well.

The 2011 vintage included a very warm and dry winter and spring. These conditions led to being fruitful with small clusters and small berries with flavors of dark berry, cherry, hints of floral and mineral. This is a forward approachable wine that displ

Byron has been producing stellar Pinot Noirs since the late 80’s from their Nielson Vineyard located in the eastern foothills of the Santa Maria Valley. Planted in 1964 this vineyard lies just south of the famous Bien Nacido Vineyard and has mature vines with carefully selected clones of Pinot Noir. The climate here is ideal for Pinot as the cooling ocean breezes flow up through the valley and temper the very warm natural conditions. This 2008 is their most popular wine and even though the appellation is Santa Maria Valley the grapes are all sourced from the single Nielson Vineyard. Robert Parker gave it 90 points and said "The generic and least expensive Pinot Noir, the 2008 Santa Maria, is a user-friendly, yet seriously endowed Pinot Noir with loads of fruitcake, roasted herbs, black cherry, and plum notes. The wine has a dark plum color, deep, lush flavors, and succulence and fleshiness that are totally seductive. Drink it over the next 2-3 years."
