Byron Pinot Noir 2013

External Review:

Byron has been producing stellar Pinot Noirs since the late 80’s from their Nielson Vineyard located in the eastern foothills of the Santa Maria Valley. Planted in 1964 this vineyard lies just south of the famous Bien Nacido Vineyard and has mature vines with carefully selected clones of Pinot Noir. The climate here is ideal for Pinot as the cooling ocean breezes flow up through the valley and temper the very warm natural conditions. This 2012 is a standout for the excellent climatic conditions the vintage brought. Aged 10 months in French oak. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 93 points saying "Berry fruit leather, raspberry iced tea and dark spices weave together on the intriguing nose of this wine, which is as good if not better than similar wines from the appellation charging twice the price. Roasted figs and black cardamom rise on the palate, yet the wine remains light on its feet."

Among the group was Ken Brown who established his Byron Winery on the site of the original, historic Nielsen Vineyard. Brown’s innovative gravity-feed winemaking facility and intensive viticultural experiments helped revolutionize cold-climate grape growing in California. Today, Byron is focused on single vineyard and regional bottlings of Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from the best benchland sites throughout Santa Barbara County. Read less

Displays aromas of dark berry and cherry accented by hints of floral and mineral. The flavor profile has a core of dark berry and dark cherry with hints of earth and brown spices, backed by a smooth, silky and long finish.
