Byron Chardonnay Santa Maria Valley Nielson Vineyard 2014

External Review:

Byron has been producing stellar Chardonnays since the late 80’s from their Nielson Vineyard located in the eastern foothills of the Santa Maria Valley. Planted in 1964 this vineyard lies just south of the famous Bien Nacido Vineyard and has mature vines with carefully selected clones. The climate here is ideal for Chard as the cooling ocean breezes flow up through the valley and temper the very warm natural conditions. This 2014 is an excellent example. This wine is completely barrel fermented and goes through 100% malolactic fermentation with use of native yeasts. They stirred the barrels once a week for the first 4 months. With bright acidity, the resulting wine is complex with clear expression of the fruit and a lush, mouthfilling texture. On SALE!!

Among the group was Ken Brown who established his Byron Winery on the site of the original, historic Nielsen Vineyard. Brown’s innovative gravity-feed winemaking facility and intensive viticultural experiments helped revolutionize cold-climate grape growing in California. Today, Byron is focused on single vineyard and regional bottlings of Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from the best benchland sites throughout Santa Barbara County. Read less
