Byron Chardonnay Santa Maria Valley Nielson Vineyard 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

Byron's 2011 Nielson Vineyard Chardonnay is a combination of clone 95 and Wente clones. It shows off the minerality and concentration of the Wente clone and the stone fruit and honey from the clone 95. The flavor profile is very creamy and rich with hints of honey, citrus and mineral with a touch of oak. The Nielson Vineyard Chardonnay is handcrafted using the gentlest winemaking techniques possible. 100% barrel fermented with 100% malolactic fermentation. During this time, the barrels were hand-stirred twice monthly to enhance texture, complexity, and longevity. Barrel aged 12 months in 100% French oak (40% new). Native yeasts, which contribute silkiness and depth to the wine, were used on selected lots to round out the final blend. 294 cases produced. Alcohol 14.1%.

Among the group was Ken Brown who established his Byron Winery on the site of the original, historic Nielsen Vineyard. Brown’s innovative gravity-feed winemaking facility and intensive viticultural experiments helped revolutionize cold-climate grape growing in California. Today, Byron is focused on single vineyard and regional bottlings of Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from the best benchland sites throughout Santa Barbara County. Read less
