Byron Chardonnay Santa Maria Valley 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

"The only Chardonnay I tasted from Byron was also outstanding. The 2008 Chardonnay Santa Maria exhibits crisp apple and tropical fruit with loads of background wood, spice, and earth. The wine is medium to full-bodied, pure, and a strong effort...90" WA 08/10

This smells a bit of soil and rocks, with notes of pressed flowers and dried banana peel over nutty dried apple fruit. Bright in the mouth yet showing an edge of creaminess on the mid-palate. Notes of butterscotch and crème brûlée accent the modest core of apple and pear fruit. The oak influence is obvious but sweet here, and that sweetness really pops on the finish where this wine kicks things into another gear. Really strong fruit, nut and oak spice finish is lovely. 89pts

Very rich, reflecting 100% barrel fermentation in partial new oak and 100% malolactic fermentation. Under the creamy lees and buttered toast are scads of pineapples, pears and papayas. The grapes come from the Nielson Vineyard.
