Byrd-Cooper Merlot Napa Valley 2005
In the spring of 2000, Dave Abreu developed the final parcel on our Conn Valley ranch, planting it to a low-yielding clone of Merlot used widely in Bordeaux. The layout is as French as the variety: vines planted low to the ground in traditional 3 X 6 spacing. We harvested our first crop from the vineyard in 2005, and winemakers Ehren Jordan and Tadeo Borchardt opted to make a soft, early maturing wine. We now offer it under our Byrd Cooper label, a designation we've reserved for wines from vineyards new to us. The aroma is full of berries, the flavors are complex, and the price is especially attractive. Byrd Cooper is the name of my maternal Grandfather, a generous and gracious man who spent his entire life farming on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I've long thought about how pleased he would be to learn that one of his grandchildren had become a farmer as well.
Nice bramble nose. Peppery, with a dry, earthy, flavor. An intense fin with licorice notes. No medicine notes at all - very good . Tasted at the Snooth Blue Angel wine event

The second label of the Neyers vineyard, Wine & Spirits Artisan Vineyard of the Year in 2002, this merlot represents Napa's best - soft, juicy, yet refined - and a fantastic value!.
This is a beautiful Merlot from the Neyers Ranch. It shows perfect ripeness, with notes of plum and coffee bean on the palate and flavors of baking spices popping out on the finish.
