Buty Semillon Sauvignon Muscadelle 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

"Sémillon dominates our classic white blend. The sand, silt-loam filled soils and cooler temperatures of Spring Creek Vineyard in the Yakima Valley nurture our sauvignon bringing bright acidity to the blend. Muscadelle from Lonesome Spring River Ranch is responsible for the florals in this verve-filled wine. A portion of the wine is lees aged in mature oak and the balance aged in a concrete tank. The picture perfect 2012 vintage has yielded a wine with mouthfilling richness, alluring aromatics and abundant varietal character. Golden fig, apricot and peach notes from the sémillon combine with the sauvignon’s key lime, gooseberry and lemongrass notes and the muscadelle’s expressive floral aromas to create a complete and compelling whole. Lovely minerality, and enlivening acidity underscore the lush fruit, while adding dimension to the smooth, silky mouthfeel. Beautiful now, but also a true cellar-worthy white." -Winery

2000 founding of buty For the first five years the winery was run entirely by Caleb and Nina. From our inaugural vintage forward, we have been very focused on selecting only the best fruit to transform into Buty wine. 2001 first vintage of rediviva of the stones and columbia rediviva In 1998 we fantasized about starting our own dream winery based on the marriage of cabernet sauvignon and syrah—which we manifested as Rediviva of the Stones and Columbia Rediviva. Buty was the first Washington winery to focus on these blends as deluxe wines. 2002 a vintage in south africa Zelma Long connected us with a winery project in South Africa, where we worked with fascination through crush. Winemaking overseas gave us an international perspective on our Washington wines. 2003 THE HOTtest vintage on record We make world-class wines that we enjoy, blending together until we perfect a wine that excites both of our palettes. We look forward to sharing each new vintage with Buty enthusiasts, good friends and family. 2004 our first vintage at phinny hill vineyard In addition to our organic estate, Rockgarden, we develop our wines at our estate grown vineyards. Our wine style begins in the vineyard as we work closely throughout the year with all of our growers. 2005 A VINTAGE OF SUPERLATIVES The seasons hold sway in our lives and in our livelihood and we practice sustainable and organic paths both in the vineyard and the cellar. The atmosphere at Buty is family-oriented, fun and creative 2006 FLUSH WITH DELUXE WINEMAKING EQUIPMENT The BEAST himself ready for harvest with punch-down tool in hand. Our alter-ego BEAST wines are released every Halloween—and sometimes on April Fool’s. 2007 TINY GRAPES AND GREAT EXTRACTION Hand sorted fruit, hand mixed fermentations and free run wines all reflect our old fashioned approach with modern tools. 2008 ROCKGARDEN ESTATE TAKES ROOT Rockgarden was an active dream for years, but it took a long time to buy land with exactly the qualifications we desired. Here, Caleb is pruning the branches and roots of mourvèdre vines before they take root in our stony soil. The Estate Rediviva of the Stones will come from this organic land. Read less

60% Semillon 19% Sauvignon 21% Muscadelle Columbia Valley 13.8% $24 Very tight and reticent on the nose. Rather rich on entry and supple with a gorgeous mouthfeel and slow to emerge flavors of melon, fig, a touch of vanilla, and dried white flowers wrapped in subtle pie crust notes. The finish shows a whisper of tannin, well integrated but supportive acids and good length. This needs time to develop. Right now it’s all about balance and potential, but a few years in the cellar will reveal much more. 87pts

This is the best white wine I have had from Washington state. The wine has multiple layers and a dual finish of tart and spicy. The muscadelle adds bouquet and a trace of sweetness and melon to an otherwise dry wine. The wine uses Malborough, NZ, CO2 fermenting techniques. Tanzer rates this a 90 wine, and Wine Enthusiast goes with 95. A Seattle wine magazine calls this Washington's top white bordeaux blend. Buty says the wine should age well.
