Buttonwood Farm Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

Member Review by Claudia Angelillo:

Love at first sniff. I'm on the farm, in the dirt, sunny day with black olive rain. A great example of what a few years can do to soften tannins. But make no mistake -- these tannins are not limp nor weak: They SING across the palate. Fresh tobacco, sweet spice, and plum dance on the tongue. All the best of Santa Ynez.

Buttonwood farm winery is a small gem set amidst the splendor of Santa Barbara County's Santa Ynez Valley. Our 39-acre vineyard stretches across a sun-drenched mesa on the eastern portion of our 106-acre property. We started planting in 1983 and now have 33,000 vines, small in the world of wine, but huge to us. Buttonwood's varietal mix of sauvignon blanc, semillon, marsanne, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and syrah reflects the preferences of owners Betty Williams and her son-in-law, Bret Davenport, for Bordeaux and Rhone style wines. As we expected, they grow perfectly in our warm, eastern Santa Ynez Valley location. Our winery was completed in time for the crush of 1989. We now produce 8,000 cases of wine a year and quite frankly, have a great time doing it. How could we not given our spectacular surroundings and the congenial winemaking atmosphere of Santa Barbara County? The satisfaction of what we do spills over to our tasting room where laughter and lively conversation abound. So on your next trip to Santa Barbara County come visit us in the Santa Ynez Valley. We’ll be waiting to welcome you to Buttonwood Farm and taste some wine with you. Read less

A dark maroon color. Big bold cabernet flavor so it's great for steak or lamb, preferably grilled. Blackberry, cinnamon, tobacco and clove/star anise.

Buttonwood’s first harvest of Cabernet Sauvignon came in 1989, and they immediately recognized the potential of the vineyard to produce grapes that reflect all the best qualities of this varietal. Since then, the combination of the vineyard location, soil type and vineyard management techniques have produced marvelous fruit from which they have created luscious Cabernets with Gold and Silver Medals each release. This 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon is a Gold Medal Wine Club Special Selection and an exciting release from Buttonwood, showcasing a delicious range of dark berry fruit flavors and good structure with a nice balance. Pre-Released from the winery exclusively for Gold Medal Wine Club, we anticipate the Cabernet to collect its medals as the wine is sent out for review during the coming months. This Cabernet evokes impressive aromas of cola and dark cherry with flavors of pomegranate and dusty plum tinged with tobacco and cedar, held together on a framework of velvety tannins. Try pairing the Buttonwood 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon with lamb shanks rubbed with herbs d’ Provence and braised in Cabernet, tomatoes, carrots and parsnips (see recipe on page 6). 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Enjoy now until 2015.
