The 2005 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a beautiful entry-level wine. This mid-weight, feminine Amarone is layered with rose petals, raspberries, truffles, sweet tobacco and herbs. The 2005 shows lovely length and polish in an understated style. I don't see this making old bones, but it should drink nicely for at least a handful of years. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2015. ** SOLD OUT **

Compact and pure, with lovely floral aromas accompanying the sweet date, currant and lightly spiced vanilla. Full-bodied, with a tight, firm tannin structure underpinning the dense dried fruit, followed by a long finish. A stylish Amarone. Best after 2010.

The 2003 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a highly unusual wine of freakish dimensions. Bussola fans will recall that the estate released its 2004 Amarones last year. This 2003 Amarone took almost five years to finish fermenting; in fact one tank was at the tail end of fermentation when I visited the estate in April 2009! This is an exotic Amarone that captures an almost port-like expression of fruit while remaining light on its feet. There is plenty of clarity and detail in the dark fruit, flowers and minerals that waft from the glass. Despite its ripeness and richness, this remains a medium-bodied, accessible Amarone perfect for near-term drinking. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2023.

The 2004 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is the wine that formerly carried the "BG" designation as the estate's entry-level Amarone. This is an accessible, fresh style of Amarone with well-delineated aromatics and plenty of clean, focused fruit. Medium in body, it offers outstanding finesse and depth on the palate. This bottling is aged in a combination of small and large barrels of various sizes. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2014.
