Editorial Reviews for Burgo Viejo Rioja Crianza

Decidedly oaky and inky on the nose with vanilla, cedar, smoke and toasted spice aromas over dried cherry fruit. This is very smooth on entry and quite rich with a firm mid-palate that us supported as much by dry extract as tannin and acid though this doesn’t feel thick. There’s a lot of rich fruit here but it’s partially obscured by the oak overlay. This turns quite spicy on the backend and drying on the modest finish. A very nice wine that appeals more for its texture than its flavors though it is a fine Crianza. 86pts

Plum and sweet red fruit aromas, with a hint of powdered sugar. Pleasant dark fruit palate, spicy on the backpalate with some black olive, cinnamon and mild earth. Tasty.

This is a nice discovery. All the rioja bonafides- leather and spice, strong fruit, overlayed with vanilla imparted by the american oak, for a nice price.

Some nuttiness and baking spices on the nose. Rich red berry fruit. On the palate, it's youthful, vibrant and juicy. Loads of strawberry and currant fruit. Slight hints of sweet tobacco leaf. Nice balance and structure. Surprising for a 6 year old Crianza!

Medium-bodied and traditional, with cranberry, red currant, cedar and hints of earth. Bright and crisp mouthfeel that finishes long.

Bright ruby-red. Fragrant aromas of cherry, pipe tobacco and vanilla, with a smoky overtone. Smoky and sweet on the palate, offering broad dark fruit flavors and a touch of coconut. Finishes juicy and long, with sneaky tannins and lingering sweetness.

The 2010 Crianza (90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano) was aged 12 months in American oak. It displays a similar color, but a slightly more complex nose of charcoal, roasted herbs, black cherries and black currants. Seductive and seamless with ripe tannin as well as low acidity, this fleshy, delicious 2010 should drink well for several more years.

Deep ruby-garnet in color, this wine has an expressive nose of berries and cream. After twelve months in American oak, the blackberry and black cherry fruit have had a chance to bond, creating a hint of vanilla and a trace of toast on the finish. Inexpensive Rioja of this quality doesn't come along all that often. Snap this one up while you can.

Licorice, fig and chocolate notes frame sweet plum and black cherry flavors in this generous red. The tannins are full but gentle, and lively acidity keeps it all fresh. Drink now through 2014.

A smooth, plump, red-ruby colored Tempranillo - with an added 10% Graciano - carrying violet tones, wood-spice aromas and a well-balanced, medium body that glides gently and effortlessly across the palate. Black fruits entwine with plum, cherry, essence of preserve and vanilla flavors. This silky-smooth Crianza is aged 12 months in American oak barrels and integrates acidity with tannin karmatically for a secular balance. All grapes for this wine come from the sub-region of Rioja Baja. The Burgo Viejo Rioja outperforms its modest price and should pair well with most foods.
