What to Expect

Syrah: One of the few grapes to really be a global success. Syrah combines a meaty core of ripe berry fruit with tones that range from herbal to peppery in a package that tends to be medium bodied with good acidity and softer tannins. With age the wines can gain lovely leathery and black olive notes that make them a great match for savory and gamy dishes.

Winemakers Notes

Syrah – Napa Valley Vintage: 2004 Region: Napa Valley, California Grape Variety: 94% Syrah, 6% Mourvedre Vineyard location: Estate Vineyard on Eastern side of Howell Mountain above Pope Valley Winemaking data: 100% malolactic; Alcohol 13.8% Bottle size: 750ml Description:2004 was a harvest where aggressive actions yielded us a wonderful harvest. There was a tremendous heat wave during harvest, and to bring the fruit in as it matured required bring on extra picking crews to work full days. If it were not for that, we could have had compromised our wine. We carefully fermented read more...

Editorial Reviews

Floral and meaty with peppercorn, green peppercorn, light sweet wood tones, and a slightly licorice tinged, candied blackberry note. Really nice syrah fruit notes. Big and round and with soft tannins and fine bright acids, a bit of coffee foam on the midpalate but this built on a pure core of dark candied plum and blackberry fruit. Well balanced with some vanilla and dirt adding a touch of complexity. Finishes long and clean with jolly rancher cherry and green apple notes and lingering sapid acidity. Fun, zesty and delicious. 90pts

Powdered sugar deep fruit nose, very warm and inviting, with a layer of crushed flowers on top. Palate is quite smooth and texture is almost creamy, an undercurrent of tannic roughness on the finish. A bit of licorice disappears quickly.

There’s a trend occurring in the Napa Valley and that is, I believe the prices are dropping, especially for non-Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Whenever I get a chance to recommend a non-Cab from the valley, I jump at it. You too should be all over this wonderful Syrah from Burgess, one of the more venerable wineries in the region. Burgess produced some mighty wonderful wines in the 1970s and ‘80s, making wines that lasted. Lately, the next generation has taken over and in its attempt at making more accessible, new world wines, I believe they are not up to the standard of the dad and founder, Tom Burgess. read more...

Wine Tasting NotesThe grapes for the Syrah were picked at optimum maturity and rotary fermented to achieve the best extraction possible. Rotary fermentation allows Burgess to maintain a proper tannin level, while also keeping a wine with a full, rich body. The wine was aged in 1/3 French oak and 2/3 American oak. The oak levels were adjusted to allow the classic blackberry fruit flavors in the wine to come forward. This wine is wonderful with any cheese, light hors doeuvres and grilled meat and vegetable dishes.
