Burgans Rias Baixas Albarino 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Soft pear fruit, leafy fruit on the nose with notes of carambola, carnations, and a touch of candlewax – Bright and juicy in the mouth with succulent pear and peach fruit tones in a lean, crisp frame. Gains a nice sweet edge on the mid-palate and finishes with a touch of lime peel. 86pts

The nose is smokey melon and peaches with a similar palate with some apricot thrown in. The finish is sweet and nicely acidic.

Soft and round, with bright tropical fruit and a nutty minerality. 100% Albariño from Galicia's Rías Baixas zone, this aromatic white wine is named for a hill called Burgans, which overlooks the Atlantic.

Burgáns is supposed to be the "commercial" wine from the Martín Códax co-op in Salnes, but we like it almost as much as the Códax itself. It's round and ripe, with some heft to the nose and body. Flavors of nectarine and macerated white grapes are tasty, and the finish is secure and substantive. Drink right away and enjoy.

Light yellow-gold. Exotically perfumed nose displays smoky peach, mango and papaya, plus a strong floral accent. Deep and chewy, with more power than I usually find in this wine. Tropical fruit flavors coat the palate and pick up a subtle herbal note on the back end. This could handle richer foods.

Light gold. Spicy, assertive aromas of orange peel, white pepper and anise, with a dusty mineral overlay. Fresh and tangy in flavor but gentle in texture, with good depth to the orange flavor. A subtle licorice note and tangy minerality arrive on the finish, which lingers impressively. This is an outstanding value.

The 2009 Albariño is light gold-colored with a lovely bouquet of white flowers, hazelnut, peach pit, and mineral. On the palate it is surprisingly complex for its bargain price with a viscosity bordering on opulence. If you enjoy Albariño, this is one to buy by the case. Burgans' Albariño is an annual Best Buy in this journal but the superb 2009 vintage in Rias Baixas has carried it to new heights.

WA 90 Pts - Tasting Notes - A bright greenish yellow color with golden tinges. Fruity aromas and complexity highlight nuances of ripe apple. On the palate, a distinct sweet character gives an intense, pleasurable sensation with a balanced and rounded structural finish.

Perfectly balanced between crisp green apple freshness and heavy, syrupy complexity. The finish is round and full with an acidic streak that cuts through and finishes clean.
