Buena Vista Pinot Noir Carneros 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

After harvest, the grapes were cold soaked for two to five days to increase color, fruit and texture. After fermentation, the wine was aged in a combination of French (80%) and American (20%) oak barrels. This Merlot spent 25 months in wood prior to bottling. The 2001 Carneros Merlot is a classic example of cool climate Merlot’s ability to be rich, well structured and complex. Aromas of blackberry, Queen Anne cherry and mocha are highlighted by light notes of herb and sweet vanilla oak. Beautifully layered flavors of cherry, plum, anise and cocoa are delivered to the palate amid rich soft tannins. The smooth elegant mouthfeel leads way to a long lingering finish.

Deep garnet color. Cherry dominates in the nose with other bright light fruits. Mild earthy aromas and dried leaves. Fairly tannic in the mouth with some bitter flavors at the end. Tart cherry and earthy flavors. After aerating, the bitterness is gone and the acidity remains strong.

Predominant cherry notes with some vanilla and hints of black pepper. Well balanced. Good value.

Deep, complex and concentrated pinot! Wonderfully dark, earthy nose or black berries and spice. On the palate, spice, cedar and slight earth hints throughout. Bold frame.

The Merlot grapes were handpicked at night to preserve fruit character and were gently destemmed before a five day cold soak which increased color, fruit essence and structure. The must was then fermented in small, open-top fermenters using daily hand punch downs. The extended time on skins and hand punch downs helped to extract maximum color, flavor and intensity. Our 2011 Carneros Merlot opens with tempting aromas of blackberry and black cherry accented by nuanced notes of plum and a dash of cinnamon. On the palate, the fruit aromas develop into integrated flavors that are accompanied by elements of pomegranate and dark chocolate. Rich and complex, the wine culminates in a long, satisfying finish. - WineryAlcohol: 14.5%pH: 3.52Total Acidity: 6.9 g/L

A distinguished Merlot, dark, dry and brooding. Complex, too, with deep flavors of blueberry, mushroom, dark chocolate and anise. The tannins are fairly fierce despite the softness, but the wine doesn't seem like a longterm ager, so give it a decant before drinking over the next few years. - S.H. This is an elegant and supple red, exhibiting aromas of black raspberry and spice that follow through to ripe, layered cherry and toasty caramel flavors. Drink now through 2017. 15,000 cases made. -TF

Rating: 84/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. Bothersome earthiness dogs this wine right from the start and stays the course even as a bit of fruit struggles to surface. It is supple and smooth and fairly appealing in feel, but its slightly dirty flirtations and its lack of keen focus relegate it to the ranks of less-than-successful Pinots.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Unlikely to improve with further aging.

Wild strawberry and raspberry flavors are fresh and focused, with a supple texture and spice box details, followed by hints of sandalwood and citrus peel on the finish.
