What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Reviews

Very deep color. A slight barnyard and dusty nose. Very soft fruits in the mouth - cherries, very nice. Very soft silky tannins.

I tasted this last Summer (almost exactly a year ago, actually: June 12, 2007). At the time, my tasting notes were sparse, but here goes anyway.

Nose of sweaty sock and soap. Flavor profile includes black cherry, with a good mouthfeel, not too bitter, slightly sour at the start of the finish, which was long, with lots of secondary flavors I didn't write down at the time.

Bright cherry fruit. A hint of pepper and mocha (in the Burgundy style), with just a bit of earthiness. 13.5% alcohol in a pinot makes for easy drinking or tasting.

The 2005 Pinot Noir Carneros has aromas of bright Bing cherry, fresh ground nutmeg and earthy wild mushroom. The palate explores hints of toastiness and exhibits flavors of deep blackberry and cherry with undertones of dark chocolate and clove spice. This is a wine of depth that leads to a long finish complemented by soft tannins and lingering berry fruit, all considered hallmarks of Carneros Pinot Noir.
