When one thinks of Buena Vista, images of the old historic winery near downtown Sonoma come to mind. But, it’s their commitment to Carneros that they’d prefer to be known for. Buena Vista owns over 1,000 acres in Carneros, far more than any other winery. From these cool-climate vineyards come some stunning Syrahs. Since the early 1990s, Syrah has been turning up more often than not in cooler regions like Carneros. Buena Vista’s neighbors -- Roche, MacRostie, Gloria Ferrer, Cline, Nicholson Ranch and Castle -- all produce really nice Syrahs, but none nailed the 2004 vintage like Buena Vista. This is exciting to me, because it represents the arrival of winemaker Jeff Stewart. This ’04 is his first commercial crack at Carneros Syrah. He comes to Buena Vista after holding winemaking positions for Kunde, De Loach, Laurier and La Crema. Jeff Stewart is obviously up to the challenge of the cool, Carneros appellation. “I’m pretty excited about what we can do with Syrah down here,” comments Stewart. “We prefer to make Syrah in similar fashion to Pinot Noir. We use open-top fermenters, and we strive to extract nice varietal character without over-extracting. I’ve always been a Pinot guy, and Syrah poses a fun challenge from the winemaking side. Pinot and Syrah are really at the opposite ends of the spectrum.” This wine shows explosive fruit in the nose, followed by fresh, clean flavors of red cherry, jammy blackberry and black pepper spice. The mouthfeel is round and enticing, with excellent tannin integration, and a long, perfumey finish. This wine impresses with its subtlety, as it isn’t a big bruiser. Delicate finesse exemplifies this terrific California-style Syrah.
