Buena Vista Carneros Winery Chardonnay 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

These Chardonnay grapes were hand harvested at night to preserve fruit character. Due to the geological diversity of our estate, we harvest blocks based upon optimum ripeness and flavor maturity. The grapes were whole cluster pressed, and the juice was fermented in barrels and aged sur lie, with the lees stirred every two weeks for 6 months. 100% of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation and was aged in French oak barrels (33% new) for 8 months. Buena Vista Carneros has started to use screwcap as the preferred closure on its wines. "I am adamant in delivering the best expression of our vineyards. I believe this closure captures the pure Chardonnay aromas and flavors and will deliver the best quality in the glass," remarks Winemaker Jeff Stewart.

Despite several setbacks, Buena Vista Carneros Winery has proven that it is capable of producing great wines no matter what the world has to throw at it. Founded in 1857 by Count Agoston Haraszthy, Buena Vista is California’s oldest premium winery. Unlike many wineries, smooth sailing was not in the cards for Buena Vista. During a trip to Nicaragua, Agoston Haraszthy died, supposedly while crossing a crocodile-infested river. Still, the winery pressed forward, carving a name for itself in California. Unfortunately, tragedy struck again, when a massive earthquake in 1906 destroyed their underground cellars. It wasn’t until 1940 that the winery recovered, thanks to Frank Bartholomew, as well as the winemaking skills of Andre Tchelistcheff. Today, Buena Vista Carneros Winery is clearly a success, since its original location just outside of the town of Sonoma is considered a California Historic Landmark. Since starting to grow wine grapes in Carneros in 1969, they have accumulated almost 500 acres in Carneros, with over 100 separate vineyard blocks, all under the guidance of winemaker Jeff Stewart. Just a bit pass its prime but not complex and interesting enough to enjoy. Two years prior may have been nice.

Rating: 92/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. Full-scaled aromas of ripe apples, sweet oak, vanilla and toast introduce this expressive Chardonnay, and there is no let up in richness on the palate. The wine is moderately full-bodied, very well-balanced and comes with all of the fruity extract needed to fill its ample frame, and, while a touch coarse and a bit lemony on the finish, it never wavers in focus and persists impressively. It will be helped in the near-term by service with richer foods, and there is a case to be made that it has good potential for a few years of improvement.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.

Tasting Notes:

The 2007 Carneros Chardonnay shows aromas of sweet vanilla, mango and pineapple fruit against a creamy, toasty background. In the mouth it shows intense apple, vibrant citrus, honeydew and pear notes through the creamy, subtly toasty finish. It’s a classic example of Carneros Chardonnay.
