Brusco Dei Barbi 2006
The Colombini family has had properties in Montalcino since 1352 and has owned the Fattoria dei Barbi since 1790. The estate is a hedonist's dream with 404 hectares devoted not only to the production of top quality wine, but also salami, prosciutto, pecorino cheese, olive oil and honey. The estate and vines of Fattoria dei Barbi are among the the oldest, most noble and most reputed of Montalcino. The estate has been rejuvenated both in the cellar and vineyards and quality improves at a steady pace. The Brusco dei Barbi is brilliant ruby red in colour. The wine has a fragrant bouquet with hints of plum and red berries. It is full bodied with soft tannins and a rich long finish. It pairs well with rack of lamb with red-currant wine sauce, tandoori spiced lamb chops, grilled sirloin steak with anise basil butter or braised pork loin cutlets with thyme-lemon sauce.
It is my everyday wine, and I look forward to five o'clock. It is a most pleasant Sangiovese. I liked it when I visited the winery in Montalcino, and the relationship has only gotten better since. The color is nice, the aroma superb, and the taste is what it's all about.

From the Colombini family in the heart of Tuscany, a great alternative to the sometimes higher-priced Chiantis of this region. Made with Sangiovese in an elegant, medium-weight style, Toscana reds are often crafted by some of Montalcino's top Brunello producers. Cherry and subtle oak flavors imparted from careful aging in older barrique (cask sized barrels) are in balance with soft tannins and lively acidity.
Raspberry jam and hints of spices follow through to a medium body, with a woody and mushroomy character and a medium finish. Sangiovese. Drink now through 2012.
A classically styled sangiovese from the Colombini family at Barbi, this is lean in the middle, long and gentle in the end. The flavors fall between cherries and cherry tomatoes, an easy match with chicken cacciatore.
