Bruno Giacosa Nebbiolo Nebbiolo d'Alba 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

Garnet red colour. Intense and complex bouquet with notes reminiscent of violet, liquorice and raspberry. Its flavour is full and robust with tannic texture. Wine of great personality that in the best vintages can bear the denomination “Riserva” on the label.

The story starts in a simple way, with the native varietals of the Langa and Roero regions and vineyards cultivated with loving care. It continues with pure, meticulous vinification, with ageing in grand oak barrels and with unforgettable Reserves. But it also includes, naturally enough, the choice not to bottle those mediocre vintages deemed unworthy of vinification. Bruno’s art encompasses passion and clear judgement but, above all, the utmost respect for his product, its admirers and for the beautiful countryside where he and his family were born and raised. The Azienda Agricola Falletto Winery comprises twenty hectares of vineyards within the Serralunga d'Alba, La Morra and Barbaresco areas. The vine growing and wine making processes are followed through with care from beginning to end, culminating with vinification and ageing within our cellars in Neive. Some of our wine is produced with grapes grown by those farmers who have always worked our winery and whose prestigious vineyards truly deserve the ‘Bruno Giacosa’ label. Read less

A light ruby red color with a slightly orange rim. Initially, bright cherry fruit on the nose with rose petal and a woodsy mushroom undertone. Very pure nose that sang Barbaresco and with time allowed the trademark of tar to rise from this wine’s bouquet. On the palette, medium bodied with raspberry and cranberry fruit and notes of tobacco on the long finish that turned to menthol and cherry. There’s a lot of chewy tannin that will take time to fade away before this wine can realize its true potential but the fruit was prominent enough to show that it should last the test of time.. This bottle was opened to early and even with the four hours of air it received in decanter, it didn’t quite show it’s true colors. I’d say this bottle needs a good 5 - 10 years before it should be sampled again.

This wine will be brilliant if you are patient and can give it more time... i (foolishly, or perhaps impatiently) tasted recently and will not touch the rest until 2018 or so. My flavour profile indicated the typical pure nebbiolo characteristics, plus dried cherries, raspberries, and a subtle faint black truffle/wild mushroom taste. Big tannins now but this will be a beauty in 8-10 years. SAVE! will soon be a 5-star beauty if you can wait.
