Bruno Giacosa Barolo Riserva Speciale Bussia di Monforte 1978

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Well this was a welcome surprise on the table which was quickly decanted and set aside for consumption later. By the time we got to it it had probably gotten 1.5 hours of air and of course that was not enough. The nose was very complex with layers of gamy, meaty tones and fried panchetta sweetness that added to the smoky, sottobosco character of the wine. The entry is cool, layered and almost silky with it's somewhat resolved structure perfectly integrated in the medium bodied fruit. Excellent, sapid and savory with ephemeral notes of lilac, ash, tobacco, and coffee caressing the elegant fruit. This is like a pair of tight, red, leather shorts on Uma Thurman. 2007-2020

The story starts in a simple way, with the native varietals of the Langa and Roero regions and vineyards cultivated with loving care. It continues with pure, meticulous vinification, with ageing in grand oak barrels and with unforgettable Reserves. But it also includes, naturally enough, the choice not to bottle those mediocre vintages deemed unworthy of vinification. Bruno’s art encompasses passion and clear judgement but, above all, the utmost respect for his product, its admirers and for the beautiful countryside where he and his family were born and raised. The Azienda Agricola Falletto Winery comprises twenty hectares of vineyards within the Serralunga d'Alba, La Morra and Barbaresco areas. The vine growing and wine making processes are followed through with care from beginning to end, culminating with vinification and ageing within our cellars in Neive. Some of our wine is produced with grapes grown by those farmers who have always worked our winery and whose prestigious vineyards truly deserve the ‘Bruno Giacosa’ label. Read less

Apon opening this had a very classic, evolved nose of old leaves, forest floor, funghi, slightly smoky and minerally nose with a touch of rust. In the mouth there was considerable bottle sweetness though the wine was a touch clumsy with a soft center and some astringency through the palate ending on a finale of bitter, mentholly and medicinal licorice. At the table this had blossomed and while still completely evolved and at the end of it's useful life the nose offered up some candied, maderized sweetness and wonderful aromatics that built on the autumnal quality encountered earlier while adding notes of tire rubber, dried orange blossom, celery seed and black olive. In the mouth there remained the initial burst of bottle sweetness and the midpalate had filled out some but was still dominated by some cutting acidity which gave lift to the fading orangy fruit. The finish offered nuanced blond tobacco and a brisk core of limestone. In all this was a very nice bottle of completely mature Barolo but failed to reach the heights of many of the other bottles.
