Bruno Giacosa Barolo Collina Rionda 1993

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Sweetly perfumed with anise, mineral, iron, celery salt and light incense tones this is beginning to really speak of Rionda. There is a touch of growing bouillon and this seems to be a bit more evolved than I would like or expect but I have to assume that this bottle has seen less than ideal storage. Big and lush on entry with great acids and edgy tannins this is structurally still very young with bright berry fruit edged with fine tea notes. Shows nice integration and a youthful palate impression. This looks promising, 2011-2015 92pts

The story starts in a simple way, with the native varietals of the Langa and Roero regions and vineyards cultivated with loving care. It continues with pure, meticulous vinification, with ageing in grand oak barrels and with unforgettable Reserves. But it also includes, naturally enough, the choice not to bottle those mediocre vintages deemed unworthy of vinification. Bruno’s art encompasses passion and clear judgement but, above all, the utmost respect for his product, its admirers and for the beautiful countryside where he and his family were born and raised. The Azienda Agricola Falletto Winery comprises twenty hectares of vineyards within the Serralunga d'Alba, La Morra and Barbaresco areas. The vine growing and wine making processes are followed through with care from beginning to end, culminating with vinification and ageing within our cellars in Neive. Some of our wine is produced with grapes grown by those farmers who have always worked our winery and whose prestigious vineyards truly deserve the ‘Bruno Giacosa’ label. Read less

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

This was served blind, obviously from the nose it seemed to be old nebbiolo and with it's green herbs, faded asian spices, caraway and cellery seed I ventured that it was Giacosa Rionde, ignoring for the moment that while it was served blind it was served with the Rionda flight. The funghi, soy, cocoa and caramel tones led me to thinking that this very mature bottle must have come from before 1978, of course having the 78 on the table helped in that regard. In the mouth the wine was quite soft, bony and sandy with a pure licorice note on the finish, a bit shy in the mouth with a nuance of fresh juniper berry and porcini accenting red fruits of modest intensity and depth. A bit loosely knit and lacking a bit of stuffing i ventured a guess that this was 1974 maybe 1976. Imagine my surprise when this was revealed as the 1985! Evolving at lightening speed, and by far the most evolved bottle of this I've had, this is part peak for me but still very good though shocking in terms of the flight.

Focused and complex on the nose with layers of briar, smoke, and mineral clay tones supporting slightly herbal fruit that shows hints of cinnamon spice. Smooth and polished in the mouth with attractive flavors that are a bit simple and slightly muddied on the palate. Still, this is showing a lovely slightly chewy texture built on tannins gently softened with age and might even improve a bit, though this drops off a touch on the finish revealing slightly bitter tannins. 91pts
