Bruno Giacosa Barolo 1989
98 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): The 1989 Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano explodes from the glass with an array of soy, spices, menthol, minerals and pine in a profound, kaleidoscopic expression of this great, great vineyard. Endowed with never-ending layers of perfumed fruit, the wine reveals mind-bending complexity and a profound personality that words will never do justice to. This remains one of Giacosa's all-time monumental wines, and it simply must be experienced by anyone who seeks to understand the genius of Bruno Giacosa. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030. (Feb 2010)
Editorial Reviews for Bruno Giacosa Barolo
From pouring the nose here is quite expressive with a base of earth and scorched orange peel which getts fresher and more complex with each passing moment adding a bright iron tone, fresh road tar, incense and church candle, and later a huge camphor note. In the mouth this is decidedly fresher than the 1990 and while style possesing masses of tannins they are only a touch drying and well concealed in the rich core of dark fruit. The excellent richness is balanced by great minerality with lots of dark, spicy tones and macerated berry fruit. This is still young but the palate is integrating well for the biggest wine of the flight and the richly fruited tones gently turn to a blackraspberry note with a whisper of butchers wax lingering on the long finale. I was able to keep a bit of this for the entire evening and there was much discussion regarding it's ability to improve since it is at such a fine place already. I think there is some potential for upside here though less than might be expected and, as Tom said, i would love to drink all mine up over the next 20 years.
Needs another 3-6 years to hit peak. Incredible richness, missing a bit of complexity. Lovely core of cherry fruit tinged with medicinal herbs. Spectacular paired with aged tellegio.
Dark color, deep and brooding nose infused with dried herbs and sun baked clay tiles slathered in spicy loganberries. Seamless in the mouth with sweet dark fruit topped with menthol notes, subtle baking spices, spiced plums. A great plush yet linear mouthfeel and a very long finish all make this a complete package. No additional comments.
When I saw this for$350 on the list at Cuvee in New Orleans on my birthday it only took me a few minutes to decide what I was drinking. This wine really needed more time than it was afforded but the bottle was pristine, much to my relief. Tight and round with an abundance of sweet tannin from the get go the nose here rolled through a procession of pure scents at turns revealing a depth of rose that was profound, tar, spice, and red fruits each took their turns teasing me. With time the palate became more expressive with a tenderness that I have found to be typical of this bottling yet atypical of the vintage and Giacosa in general. This really drinks like Burgundy with a mouthful of griottes red berries over a delicate, layered core of earth and subtle spice. The final few sips, after about 3 hours, really showed the wine at it's best with more depth and weight but still far from revealing the power i hope this wine is hiding. It was an excellent match for my smoked duck breast/ duck confit entree. I will try this again in about 5 years and am hopeful that the additional time will pull back the curtain!
Bright deep and lovely. A touch soapy on the nose at first then turning deep and brooding with an intense rich marzipan note that adds roasted plums, sandlewood and very fine tea top notes to the explosive nose. Lush and integrated in the mouth, the tannins drape across the tongue like silk couched in deep ripe fruit up front but the structure slowly crowds out the nuance on the back end and the wines finish shortens and tightens up with air. Still exceptional if in need of 5 years in the cellar.
This had as complete and complex a nose as we were going to see this evening. Redolent of dried spices, fresh rose petal, raspberry, black pepper and medicinal herbs in a nuanced, balance package. On the palate the tannins started out with a chewy edge but quickly revealed their ripeness as they melded into the sour raspberry and sour cherry core of fruit that had an inner mouth perfume hinting of peach. Lovely notes of rose and fruit linger on the long finish 2009-2022 93pts
