Bruce Wayne Merlot Blend Napa Valley Ella's Blend 2007

External Review by Prestige Wine & Spirits:

A new-world blockbuster, this was the top finisher in our April blind tasting of 17 wines. Abundant aromas of berries, chocolate, and a cornucopia of spices - clove, anise, allspice, cinnamon and brown sugar. With massive concentration, moderate tannin and relatively high alcohol, this Merlot-based wine is a hedonist's delight, and "not for wimps."

Had the '06. Very very oaky, but think the oak was dragging the fruit on a bit here. Finish fell fairly flat, even though midpalate felt like it was going to open up a little. Tannins were harsher than what I would have liked. May come back after I've let it open up to see if it takes a better turn.

Not a lot of depth to this wine, but the strong oakiness of the bouquet and the attack were terrific. It had mild tannins and a weak finish, but it was very drinkable with flavorful foods. A note at the shop where I bought it recommended pairing it with grilled foods, so I drank it with grilled steak and sweet potatoes and that worked out well. I did lose a bit of the sweetness of the maple-glazed sweet potatoes, and mashed potatoes probably would have been a better fit, but I would look forward to having that whole meal again, regardless.

Calling all Zinfandel lovers! This beautifully pure Merlot weighs in with a super-hero 15.7% alcohol level - well into the Zinfandel ripeness range. Extraordinary fruit flavors and concentration keep the heat in check, but this is not for the meek. Amazing quality for the price, this Merlot is aged 20 months in oak and there are only 800 cases. Truly a cult winery named after, not the guy in the Batmobile, but two guys named Bruce Walker and Wayne Hansen - do you think they missed the reference? Ella's pawprints (she's an Alaskan Malamute) cross the label and disappear into this dark, lush wine.
