Our history When we established our 24-hectare vineyard in 1994, we fulfilled a long-held dream for my father Jim, who bought this land about 20 years ago, knowing the rich red soil would be perfect for grapes. When he first saw the block, Jim was instantly reminded of his childhood stomping ground round the gold mines of Kalgoorlie. Brown Hill was the claim that made the Golden Mile famous and he remembers going with his father to water their vegetable patch by diverting water from the old Brown Hill mine site. Four generations of Baileys lived in the goldfields with close ties to Brown Hill, so it seemed only natural to Dad to give his land the same name. Many of our wines, which are all estate grown, also take their names from famous gold mines or miners in the Kalgoorlie area. Jim’s now the vineyard manager, while I, an accountant in a former life, am the winemaker. The rest of the family are involved too – pitching in at the cellar door, in the winery and in the vineyard to ensure we give you not only the highest quality red and white wines, but also the highest quality service. Our vineyard Located about 12 kilometres south east of Margaret River, our vineyard is planted to cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, merlot, sauvignon blanc and semillon. We wholeheartedly believe in the maxim that ‘great wine is made in the vineyard’ so we don’t irrigate our vines, instead leaving them to reap the benefits of the harsh, gravelly (lateritic) soils and the warm, sunny climate. Being dry grown, the vines are stressed to direct what little water they get into their fruit. This results in small, intensely flavoured grapes – our cabernet grapes are smaller than peas! – which lead, of course, to deeply coloured, intensely flavoured wines. It also leads to significantly lower yields than the Margaret River average, which is 4-5 tonnes per acre. The yield for our Reserve wines is only 0.8 tonnes per acre, and 1.5 tonnes per acre for everything else, even our everyday drinking wines. Read less
