Brovia Barolo Ca'Mia 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

"Brovia’s Serralunga Barolo, the 2008 Barolo Ca’ Mia, saturates every corner of the palate. Dark fruit, smoke, melted road tar, graphite and incense wrap around the palate in this dramatic large-scaled Barolo. Even more promising than it was right after bottling, the 2008 impresses for its spherical personality and towering class. Serralunga is, of course, best known for producing powerful wines, but Brovia’s Ca’Mia is just as remarkable for its superb finesse and elegance. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040...96+" WA 10/12

Superb florality on the nose this open with intense, dark, muscular fruit filled with soil and medicinal tones and wrapped in the gentle sweetness of old wood. Tight, and yet showing real finesse here, this offers up lovely dark flavors accented with a hint of fresh peach and rich, ripe tannins that are seamlessly integrated. With air this turns slightly medicinal, and with a slight prune flavor and late arriving wild cherry fruit adding complexity, this shows off elegance and finesse in spades. A touch short today but this is superbly put together. 93pts

Dark plum draped fruit on the nose is accented by notes of ripe stems, suggestions of cocoa and limestone and a huge sweetness of fruit. On entry, this is muscular, dark, dense and vibrantly clear with amazing cut. The flavors tend toward slightly macerated cherry fruit with hints of raspberry and a huge medicinal, savory spice top note. The finish is equally impressive with an intense sour red fruit finish, almost red peppercorn spiciness and super precise tannins. 94pts

The 2008 Barolo Ca' Mia is beguiling and exotic. Sweet hard candy, flowers, mint and licorice meld into a core of racy red fruit. Firm tannins frame a long, insistent finish laced with rose petals, sweet spices and licorice. The Ca' Mia is highly exp... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. Good full deep red. An explosion of black plum tar spices and melted licorice on the nose with subtle nuances of meat and tobacco. Big sweet and round with harmonious acidity energizing the cherry and spice flavors. A rich even massive fruit bomb in the context of these 2008s but with terrific definition too. Finishes with strong dusty tannins and a hint of austerity that suggests this wine will age slowly and gracefully. 94+ Stephen Tanzers IWC.
