Brokenwood Semillon 2015

External Review:

Pale straw. Honeysuckle jasmine fresh pear and honey on the fragrant nose accented by a touch of chalk dust. Crisp and nervy on the palate with vibrant lemon-lime and orange pith flavors enlivened by bitter herb notes. Youthfully tight on the finish with features clean brisk citrus tones and a late note of quinine. Stephen Tanzers IWC.

At nearly 40 years young, Brokenwood Wines, in the heart of the Hunter Valley, can lay claim to not only an iconic vineyard with the Graveyard Vineyard but to the preservation of a wine fraternity that proudly has as its mission statement, 'to make great wine and have fun'. The original land that was to become the Cricket Pitch Vineyard was purchased in 1970 and planted immediately to Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Graveyard Vineyard, planted to Shiraz in 1968, was bought in 1978 and by the mid 1980s was producing a premium Single Vineyard wine. The first Langton's Classification of Premium Australian Wine was launched in 1993 and the Graveyard Shiraz was then, and remains, the highest-placed Hunter Valley Shiraz. The Hunter Valley is renowned for its dry table wines of Semillon and Shiraz. Brokenwood’s production of these is further supported by premium grapes from as far afield as Orange, Beechworth and McLaren Vale. Today, Brokenwood boasts an impressive array of premium quality wines, sourced from 'all the right regions, for all the right reasons', from the Graveyard Shiraz to the Cricket Pitch Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Cricket Pitch Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot. This bright lively white brims with lime green apple and floral flavors finishing silky. Refreshing now but give this time to flesh out. Drink now through 2025.

Tight fresh crisp dry young Semillon. While the wine will undoubtedly age well it has a simple and slightly rustic charm now fitting into a category of bone/dry and rather austere wines that I call "green wines" (my list includes Muscadet and Vinho Verde from France and Portugal respectively). A brilliant match with fresh seafood particularly oysters. Not everyone s cup of tea but I love it. Bob Campbell MW.

Pale yellow. High-pitched mineral-driven aromas of lemon zest talc and spearmint. Taut and juicy showing citrus fruits a hint of green apple and strong minerality. Picks up deeper melon and pear character with air and finishes dry and persistent. I like this wine s linear character. Stephen Tanzers IWC.

Pale quartz-green; right in the mainstream of Hunter Valley semillon, still delicate on the bouquet, but with a palate full of nervous energy (nervosity in French) ad tingling citrus/lemongrass flavours running through to a very long finish. Screwcap... James Halliday. A Semillon wine from New South Wales in Australia. 2010 Brokenwood Semillon 750ml

Pale straw. Dusty, mineral-laced aromas of pear, green apple, floral honey, fresh hay and bergamot.Fleshy on the palate, with flavors of talc, minerally lemon zest, limeade and pink grapefruit. Quite juicy and wound up but extremely promising and built for the long haul. Finishes spicy, focused and with excellent citric verve.
