Broglia Gavi di Gavi la Meirana 2015

Winemaker's Notes:

Piero Broglia released his first wine from his father’s La Meirana estate in 1974, but there is a record of vines at the property that dates back to 971 AD, the very beginning of the story of Gavi. An MP with a law degree, Piero is a born researcher, having provided Italy’s first register of satellite-mapped vineyards, in Gavi, and carried out a study into clones of Cortese, the local vine. Broglia currently own around hundred hectares of land, of which half is under vine. This particular Gavi has great texture and precision, with distinctive greengage and almond notes on the palate. Fresh and dry, this is particularly characterful Gavi.

This is the only Gavi di Gavi DOCG that I have had, but it is a great white wine at a decent price value. Goes great with seafood. More body and more concentrated food than the simple cheaper Gavi's out there. Good minerality to it with a fleshy lime and tropical fruit flavors.

The 2011 Gavi di Gavi La Meirana is a serious, intense wine loaded with yellow-fleshed fruit. This is a decidedly rich vintage for the Meirana. There is perhaps a little less polish than normal, but the 2011 is quite pretty just the same. Anticipated maturity: 2012–2015.

A rich, creamy version, offering peach, citrus and light smoke flavors. Bright, with a hint of citrus peel on the finish. Drink now.

Brogliarsquo;s 2008 Gavi di Gavi La Meirana is wonderfully fresh and perfumed in its peaches, apricots, spices and flowers. This is an especially ripe style of Gavi with an almost-tropical expression of fruit wrapped into a medium-bodied frame. The winersquo;s balance is simply impeccable. As is often the case, Broglia makes some of the finest wines in the Gavi appellation. Anticipated maturity: 2009ndash;2012.

All aboard the Gavi train! These whites from Italy, made from the Cortese grape, have been making a lot of press lately, and for good reason mdash; high acidity and a mineral base make for easy-to-drink, very food-friendly wines, often at a very affordable price. Instead of shelling out $8 more for a good Sancerre, check out the Broglia Gavi mdash; medium-bodied, flinty and grapefruity, this is everything you could want from a good Sauvignon Blanc, but with a hint of anise and flowers on the nose to make you wake up and pay attention.

Bright medium yellow-gold. White flowers, lime and passion fruit on the nose, with complicating suggestions of chalk. Kiwi and vanilla custard are lifted by hints of minerals and lime on the long, crisp finish. Offers exceptional quality for an entry-level wine.

The 2008 La Meirana is a sparkling wine made from Cortese (the same grape used for Gavi), which I tasted for the first time this year. Beautifully precise white peaches, menthol and flowers are given an extra sense of lift from a fine mousse, here achieved through the Chianti method. This is an absolutely gorgeous sparkling wine that delivers tons of class for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2010ndash;2012.
