Broc Cellars Syrah Bennett Valley Dry Stack Vineyard 2007

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

polished and shiny on the nose with vanilla, oak, spice, cracked pepper, star anise, dried juniper and a ball of sweet, ripe, spicy red and black fruits. This is downright silky with a fine balance of sweetness from both the fruit and wood and counteracting acidity. This is black fruited, dark yet agile on the palate with a wonderful clarity even if the wine is a touch simple.. Sinewy and muscular with lovely purity if a bit too oaky on the backend. Give this 2-3 years for all the oak to integrate but this is already one gorgeous mouthful of syrah. Finish could be longer. 90pts

Broc Cellars was nothing more than an idea not that long ago, formed by Chris Brockway, about making wines that were “site specific”. Where the wines true character came from using only sustainably, organically, or biodynamically grown grapes from areas that most would consider marginal climates. Believing that vineyards develop ‘true’ character and complexity when they have to struggle to survive. This can come from many different aspects: poor nutrient and water holding capacity, steep slopes, cool temperatures, or from old vines that are dry farmed. Read less

Bright fruit, but mellow nose. Cough syrup and spice. A lot of fruit, leather and raspberry.

From the Dry Stack Vineyard in Bennett Valley, this powerful, yet elegant wine possesses exotic aromatics and rich fruit flavor which demonstrates the amazing potential of this unique vineyard and region. The wine shows red and black berries along with anise, white flowers and sweet pipe tobacco. The amount of complexity, even in its youth, promises this intense, full-bodied Syrah drinks beautifully now and will continue to do so for some time. Winemaker, Chris Brockway may not come from a historically significant wine family, but it's apparent he's still got some juice in his veins. His venture, Broc Cellars, is a small production enterprise that keeps Chris closely tied to the life of his wines, starting in the vineyards. The grenache for this wine comes from the rocky soils of Dry Stack Vineyard in the Bennett Valley AVA, southeast of the city of Santa Rosa. The vineyard is cooled by marine air from the Petaluma Valley, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly.

Coming from the Bennet Valley, a cool sub-region of Sonoma Valley, this Syrah shows good balance, great natural acidity, and lively tannins. Notes of black and red fruit, licorice, and a floral bouquet come forth in this handcrafted Syrah.
