Broadbent Madeira Rainwater NV

Winemaker's Notes:

"Madeira, warm and luscious in both its dry and sweet variations, makes an excellent wine for winter and the holiday season. This modest but delicious item from the respected Broadbent firm, is an excellent choice for December sipping. Clear dark reddish-copper in color, it breathes classic and very appealing Madeira scents of dried dates and figs and mixed nuts. Smooth and gently sweet, it's not a sticky"" dessert wine but shows good fresh-fruit sweetness built on Madeira's sturdy core of tart, lemony acidity. FOOD MATCH: We enjoyed it by itself as an after-dinner treat, but it would have gone well with a cheese plate, or echoing the wine's aroma characteristics with a selection of dried fruits and nuts. I love good Madeira. Why isn't it more popular and more available? Fairly sweet to begin with, but grows more interesting, with notes of lemon, lime, cherry, and brandy. There is a mild bitterness and chili-like warmth in the finish. Good, but not as complex as others I've tried.

Here’s a good introduction to Madeira. Appealing, straightforward flavors of caramel are followed by a tangy acidity and a walnut note on the finish. Drink now.

A traditional medium style, aged in cask for three years before bottling. This is light, flavored with dates and softly sweet. It misses some of the classic Madeira acidity, leaving a gentle aftertaste.
