Bridlewood Estate Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles 2011

External Review:

A potential stunning bargain in Cabernet Sauvignon is Bridlewoodandrsquo;s 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles. There are 18,000 cases of this $15 a bottle Cabernet, a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and a dollop of Zinfandel. It offers copious amounts of black currant fruit intermixed with cedar, spice box notes, full body, sweet tannins and an opulent texture. This wine clearly over-delivers and from an area known for its robust alcohol levels, it came in at a mere 13% alcohol.

Bridlewood Winery was designed for high-quality, artisan winemaking. Just inside the adobe façade of this Spanish-style winery, state-of-the-art equipment is the order of the day: pneumatic bladder presses, temperature controlled fermenters, gentle grape and wine handling systems, and the finest European and American oak barrels. Our intimate winery is the perfect workshop for winemaker David Hopkins, who selects grapes from dozens of Central Coast vineyards to create his intense , lush Pinot Noir, aromatic Viognier and elegant Chardonnay. Each wine is as unique as the Bridlewood property itself. Read less

Terrific plummy color. Unfortunate viney and alcoholic aromas. Vine flavors continue on the palate, but then as the wine moves across the palate sweetness emerges (maybe from the alcohol?). Fruit emerges, but it's not typical cabernet flavor. More like Pinot. Some roughness around the edges of the tongue. OK, medium finish. US$10.99 at Total Wine.

Nice body, easy to drink, great alone or with food. Good to have on hand.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with lovely varietal aromatics that meld into a core of expressive dark red fruit. The Cabernet possesses lovely inner sweetness and an up-front, engaging personality. Another few months in bottle should help some of the overt oakiness to mellow. Anticipated maturity: 2012andndash;2015.
