Brewer-Clifton Chardonnay Santa Rita Hills Sta. Rita Hills Ashley's Vineyard 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Marred by a bit of sulfur upon opening, which takes awhile to blow off, this reveals musky melon tones and notes of dried citrus peel with a spicy white pepper undercurrent. On entry this is superbly vibrant with excellent cut and a wonderful crystalline clear quality to the citrus fruits on the palate. The acid is refreshing and cleansing and really drives the sweet fresh fruit across the palate and onto the backend, which reveals just a touch of wood spice. The finish is moderately long, with lovely lemony fruit. A really refreshing and bright bottle of Chardonnay. 92pts

Born of an obsession with Santa Barbara County terroir, we formed Brewer - Clifton in the early 1990’s. We both had significant sales and production experience with a multitude of Santa Barbara County wineries, and always felt compelled to push the limits of the fruit from the area further than our previous employers had set forth to do. We set out to put the essence of the best vineyards in the area into a bottle. Cargasacchi VineyardBrewer - Clifton focus solely on site-expressive wines from the Sta. Rita Hills appellation using Chardonnay and Pinot Noir as voices of place. The area's long growing seasons and diversity of marine-based soils combine to produce dynamic and explosive wines with great purity and precision. Each vineyard site is nurtured identically, allowing the pedigree of place to play the most significant role in our portfolio of wines. From our initial production of 1996, our pursuit has been to express the individual identity of particular sites within our appellation. While that approach remains a strong driving force behind our efforts, we elected to demonstrate a more complete voice of place beginning with the spectacular 2007 harvest. From this point forward, we expect to release a Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, capitalizing on the blending or our most heralded vineyard holdings. Just like a quartet is incomparable to a solo, it is neither the goal nor the intent to compare our appellation wines with our vineyard-specific bottlings. The two should be interpreted as separate manifestations along a lateral plain where the difference of expression is a celebrated attribute. In addition to our collective efforts, Steve Clifton also produces wine under his own label, called Palmina, which focuses exclusively on Italian varietals, and is the winemaker at Tritono, an Argentine producer of Malbec. Greg Brewer produces wine under the diatom label, as well as being the winemaker at Melville, a Santa Rita Hills winery dedicated to estate grown Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. Brewer-Clifton wines are only available in small quantities. Total production averages between 7,000 and 8,000 cases annually. Read less

I have had this bottle in my cupboard for just over a year and can remember buying it when it was on a special offer at my local supermarket but I cannot now recall the price although I am sure it was not a lot.I had half of it a couple of days ago with my fish supper and the rest the following night with bread and cheese.I usually have port or a red wine with cheese but it seemed to work OK.The label says'notes of melon and vanilla' and I would not disagree.I thoght it of reasonable quality and value for money but a little bland. My problem is that I went to the London France Show back in January where I got to taste a small glass of Domaine Debray White Burgundy that was just exquisite and so much better than the Blossom Hill but to be fair it was a lot more expensive

While I may not offer many flowery adjectives, I can say that I tasted at Melville and this Chard made the strongest impression by far. It has a wonderful fruitiness up front, with a delightfully crisp and smooth finish. Definitely better than the official 3.0 rating. And at its reasonable price it's a no-brainer!

Way too austere to be consumed now. Read Parker review and was very excited to try it. I did and it lacked depth and a detailed or finessed structure. It was very tart, when first consumed almost fizzy. If it adds fruit on the palate and keeps it minerality it may become a good wine. I won't try it again for two years. It is not ready to drink now. For immediate consumption it doesn't hold a candle to an Aubert, Konsgaard, Kistler or the like.

With an electric green-gold hue this wine has an elusive and fresh aromatic array of saline, limes, lemon drops, lemon-lime margarita, green apple skin, white currants and white apricots. Even more alluring are the other aspects of chalk, saltwater taffy, angel food cake, gingerbread, seashell, Italian parsley and orange-flower blossom. In the mouth, the wine is ample and fleshy yet remains very chiseled, delineated and crisp. With an electric green-gold hue this wine has an elusive and fresh aromatic array of saline, limes, lemon drops, lemon-lime margarita, green apple skin, white currants and white apricots.
