La Soufrandière, an old estate in Vinzelles in Southern Mâconnais (Southern Burgundy), was bought in 1947 by A.J. Bret, a Medical Professor. The surface under vines was only one hectare (2.47 acres) all in the « appellation d'origine contrôlée » Pouilly-Vinzelles Climat "Les Quarts". The only remaining testimony of its past viticultural life was a « tinailler » (a traditional Maconnais house used as a vat-room) complete with an old-fashioned wine-press. A.J. BRET started to enlarge La Soufrandière by acquiring plots of vines next to those already existing. All the vines were then worked by share-farmers (share-cropping) and the resulting crop was brought to and commercialised by the local Cooperative (Cave Coopérative de Vinzelles). Jean-Paul BRET - A.J.’s and Louise Bret’s third son in a family of four children – became manager of La Soufrandière in 1969. The surface under vines was to reach 4.55 ha (11.11 acres) of which 4 ha of Pouilly-Vinzelles Climat "Les Quarts" and 0.55 ha of Pouilly-Vinzelles Climat "Les Longeays". In 1998, La Soufrandière withdrew from the Cave Coopérative de Vinzelles in anticipation of the arrival of Jean-Guillaume and Jean-Philippe, two of Jean-Paul et Marie-Rose BRET’s three sons. A year of transition and revolution, 2000 was the first vintage vinified, aged and bottled by La Soufrandière. From the 2001 vintage onwards, the grapes picked at la Soufrandière have been sold to Bret Brothers who market the wines from the estate. Read less
