- Deep garnet red in color, the 2002 Terraces Pinot Noir opens with aromas of dark berry fruit and spice that are highlighted by notes of chocolate and coffee. The palate brings rich forward flavours of black plums and ripe raspberries layered with a toasty oak component lent by the barrel aging. The mouthfeel is smooth and silky with fine tannin structure and a long lingering finish. This is the first release of this hand-crafted wine which will be made only in the finest vintages. The fruit is sourced from the company's best Pinot Noir blocks including a stunning terraced hillside. This is read more...very much a handmade wine. The terraces that give this wine its name are on a small spur adjoining Brancott Estate on the southern end of the generally cool Wairau Valley, a sheltered, warm site that slopes steeply to the east. The slope not only exposes the vine root areas to more heat, but allowed vines to be planted in a north-south orientation to optimize natural sun exposure for fruit on both sides of the vine row. The site was planted in three different clones, on two different rootstocks each - effectively creating six different blending options for the winemaker. (hide)
