Boxhead winemakers is a collaboration between Hentley Farms winery of Barossa, Australia and their American Importer Vine Street Imports. Their goal is to produce an affordable range of wines from South Australia that reflect local flavors. The wines are hand-crafted at Hentley Farm from grapes sourced from choice vineyard sites across South Australia. From the VS Imports website: “A number of different winemakers were involved in the Boxhead Shiraz winemaking, with responsibilities split by regionality. All parcels were crushed, destemmed and left on skins for approximately 10 days during primary ferment. The parcels were then pressed and kept separate for malolactic fermentation. A portion underwent malolactic fermentation and maturation in new and 1yr old French barriques to add complexity.” Read less

Raw wood greets the nose, effusive and abruptly covering anything else this might have to offer other than some subtle floral notes. Soft on entry and nice round if small in the mouth with an attractive core of red strawberry and wild cherry fruit. The wood is here but not nearly as intrusive as on the nose. Soft and easy drinking, this does pick up cedar and perfumy notes on the finish, which is surprisingly long and rather lively with red fruit and attractive acidity. It’s really quite gulpable and fresh once you get past the nose. 84pts
