Bouchard Pere & Fils Chambertin Clos de Beze(2003)

Eighty-six hectares of Grand and Premier Cru vineyards. One hundred thirty total hectares in the Cote d'Or. Eighty crus produced each vintage. Two hundred seventy-five years of history. Bouchard Pere et Fils is truly an institution in Beaune. A notch up in elegance and complexity but not in weight, power, concentration or overall balance. Still, the seductive spiciness of a fine Clos de Bèze is present in spades as the very expressive nose is quite pinot in character and this too has a distinct floral component. The mouth coating flavors deliver dazzling complexity with a mocha-infused finish where the tannins really make themselves apparent. Built to age and it will require lots of time to tame the now muscular and firmly tannic spine.

Bright medium red. Knockout musky nose combines candied strawberry, iron, minerals, espresso and mocha. Sweet, thick and highly concentrated, if a tad reduced today. A large-scaled, airy, very broad wine with mouthfilling flavors of roasted strawberry, minerals and smoky earth tones. Finishes with suave tannins, firm underlying structure and terrific length and grip. Like the best of the Bouchard 2002s, this should be laid down for at least five to eight years.
