Bouchard Père & Fils Beaune de Château Blanc 2004
Legend has it that the name of this white "cru" comes from the sharing out of the land by the Seigneur de Montrachet between his two sons : one had become a knight stet fighting the enemy during the crusades, and the other, illegitimate, is supposed to have given his name to Bâtard-Montrachet, situated just below Montrachet. Chevalier-Montrachet forms a horizontal strip at the top of Montrachet and, in fact, its soil was often used to make up that of Montrachet. Since the 18th century, the growers have toiled over this harsh land with its stones of chalk and marl at the top, read more... and ordinary chalk at the bottom which produces wines of unparalleled quality. During the 19TH century the Bouchard family was quick to acquire several pieces of land in Chevalier-Montrachet and is now the biggest grower with 2.56 hectares representing 34% of the total area. Thus, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the rare, privileged owners of part of this magnificent vineyard. With a magnificent bright gold colour, Chevalier-Montrachet is the essence of finesse, refinement and delicacy
Apples and pears predominate on the nose with some wild mountain stream notes - almost like melting snow for those of you who know something about the many nuances of frozen water. Good, sweet chardonnay core on entry - but subtle - with little oak apparent. Some hazelnut or almond, but less present than in some other examples of this wine. Satisfying, medium finish. Perfect for drinking now, but will last another year or two.
Stewed soft fruit such as peach and pear greet the nose - which is somewhat slow to open. This well-reputed premier cru Meursault shows all the hallmarks of its provenance: perfume lifting the sensual incense of life through the nostrils while soft spices light and alight in sequence from the tongue. Typical diacetyl (butter) and medium viscosity insofar as texture is concerned with gentle oak - well balanced and unobtrusive. An excellent wine.

As it almost always is, this is notably more elegant aromatically with its airy white flower, spice and limestone aromas that precede textured, pure and defined flavors that possess an utterly different texture and mouth feel, all wrapped in a brilliantly focused and mouth coating finish.
