What to Expect

Chardonnay is America's most popular grape and with good reason. Made in styles that range from steely, mineral laced wines with crisp green apple fruit to wines that are buttery, rich, and laden with tropical fruits, there is a Chardonnay that will appeal to every palate. Chardonnay is most closely associated with France's Burgundy region and California's Northern valleys though it has proven successful around the globe.

Winemakers Notes

The wine is a blend of the following Chardonnay clones: UCD 4 which provides structure, acidity, and citrus flavors; Dijon 76 and 96 which add essential oils and flavor complexity; and a heritage Muscat clone to introduce floral and perfumed aromatics. fermentation consisted of 85% in oak barrels and 15% in stainless steel. Its lower alcohol and lively crispness comes from the judicious use of new barrels (30%).

Rating: 83/100 - As reviewed by AmericanWinery.com I have never actually been to the track, but for some reason this wine takes me there. Picture this: bright and sunny, with the scent of goat cheese, ripe green apples, and horses. On the palate it starts off tart - like the skin of a granny smith apple and turns into this nutty yeasty flavor on the mid palate. It's soft and I almost like where it's going, with it's finish like creme fraiche topped bananas. Sounds like a classy day the horse races to me. . . .

On the smell action sensation I'm picking up a mixture of grapefruit, sour apple and a pinch of hazelnuts. The taste rolls in with a buttered popcorn taste with a hint of yeast in addition to the sweet breakfast fruit melange.

This wine definitely does not fit the mold of a traditional California Chardonnay. There is perfume and incense on the nose, with just a touch of citrus fruit. The flavors are over-ripe apples with a touch of salty yeast, a far cry from the butter and oak of tradition. The finish is lacking, a there and then gone sprite component. Definitely an original undertaking.

As a journalist, first as a sportswriter, then as a wine writer, I’m always being asked, “What is your favorite team?” and now “What is your favorite wine?” I don’t have a “favorite,” because I’m always rooting for the story, not the team or the wine. But I have to tell you, I root for the Carneros. Because Los Carneros - once the original frontrunner with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - is now the decided underdog. The Russian River and the Anderson Valley and upstarts such as the Santas (Barbara, Rita and Lucia) have come out of nowhere to forge ahead. But I’m telling you, don’t read more...
