I bought a box of the 2009 based on the nice packaging and the Cal State fair review on the 2008......of 95 no less. Due to the economy killing my preferred higher end normal purchases I have been trying box wines for a so called everyday wine. So far I have liked the Black Box Cab(84 my score), didn't like Black box Shiraz, and the Big House red(84 my score). Seems like all the box wines I have bought need time out of the vacuum to show themselves. Often they seem too tart and tight upon first pour. This '09 Zin from Bota is very thin for Zin, almost watered down. It is juice and very viscous and does how very bright, tart, flavors, although the flavor profile is far too spread apart. It is not focus or rich as one who drinks Zin would expect. I actually poured some opened Italian into the Zin to make it richer and it worked well. Even at a great deal of $15 I wouldn't buy it again. I did but the Big House red and Black box Cab again. The big house is maybe the most interesting because it is dense, spicy, and has a reasonable finish. But I highly recommend decanting to let some of the youth disappear. I actually turn the box upside down and open the spout to let some air into the vacuum bag.

I've had this on two occasions, one 2008 and one 2009. Both times the wine was very fruity, with black fruit notes. After having the box sit in my fridge for weeks, I can attest that it stays fresh for extended periods of time, though after the first week or so it starts to taper off.

Bought a tiny tetrapak of this off an impulse rack for $4.99. Call me curious. There's fruit on the nose but it withers in the heat; one-note jammy black fruit on the palate, with a dark, pruney shadow that settles in along the edges of the tongue. Not so much a "finish" as an aftertaste. Not offensive, but also not even up to other box (yellow+blue, say) standards. I'll spend my next $4.99 on beer.

This was my first try of boxed wine. Overall, it is drinkable, but I'm a bit disappointed. I'm not sure if the odd taste I'm getting is some flaw in the wine or if it has been in contact with the plastic bag for too long. Either way, I find the 95 rating listed on the box to be very unrealistic. I won't be dumping it, but I will be looking for a different box next time.

I'm trying out a box wine in search of a convenient and drinkable daily jug wine. The Bota Box claims an approximate 45 day freshness after opening and at $17.50 it's less than 4.5 per bottle! Double Dip Recession, bring it on! As to be expected from a box, the wine is by no mean rich, complex or packing an old vine Zin wallop. Blackberry, slightly floral as licorice on the nose. A slightly jam smell is followed by a medium weight creamy and somewhat soapy feel. No heat or pepper is disappointing given it's supposed to be an old vine Zin. Finish is mild and sweet of chocolate & blueberries. I would pair it with a spicy Indian dish or a caramelized lamb chop for a very rich entrée.

In my ever-continuing search for quality, consistency and affordability I have found the Bota Box Zin to meet all three of these criteria. The quality is that of a good table wine one would find in a café in Italy or France and is consistently solid. As for affordability, at $17 - $19 for a 3 liter box (4 bottles) you can’t beat the price! This is my "House Pour". Once you get over the perceived stigma of drinking wine from a bag/box you will be a convert too!

Strong prune juice flavors. Sounds odd, but it is tasty.
